    mindless eating at games

In high school, we'd amass all kinds of junk food and soda at the table. The caffeine/sugar fueled arguments that inevitably erupted were epic. Frothing at the mouth, quivering teenagers spitting bile and hatred at one another. "How dare you take that +2 longsword!" "Go back to DM school, you...

    capping D&D at 5th level?

I started playing in 1984 using 1e. Aspects of that game, such as the name levels you mentioned, have greatly influenced my style. I've struggled when DMing for people who expect to advance to 20th level. I disappoint them because I am very happy gaming in my personal sweet spot between levels...

Men In Black, Cue Cards, and You.

I used those in GURPS. They worked great! It was a steampunk game, with muskets and all that. One card we used: "Good, bad...I'm the guy with the gun." Gain +1 to your Gun (muskets) skill. Cue cards are great for shy players, who may not feel comfortable role-playing. For D&D, hmmm...how...

    Stupidest Things DMs Have Done

The dumbest thing I've done is not give campaigns enough time to develop. I've ended many games prematurely. I wish I would have given players time to really get into their characters. My bad.

GAHH!! Time to take a break from 3.5

My only experience with RM was playing MERP. What a great game. So concise. An entire system in a 100 page perfect bound book. And those supplements! The cover art and maps were brilliant. But yes, the system was brutal. We tried to fight a troll and ended up running like hell.

Was there a mention of Wormy? I really miss Dave Trampier's work.

GAHH!! Time to take a break from 3.5

Somewhere at about 9th-10th level, the game upped its power level to Super-Heroes Without Capes. And it was about then I just plain started getting crabby about the whole damn thing. Wow. That's a pretty succinct way to put it. You also make the point that even if you don't want to play that...

    Letters to home (per Iridia)

Heh. That's pretty funny. Father: Go to your room! Adventurer: You can't put me on restriction! Father: Why not? Adventurer: Because I have a +2 longsword and 58 hit points that say so. Father: Good point. Off you go then.

    Letters to home (per Iridia)

Oh, hey! I'm glad you enjoyed the article. :) I wish I still had some of the letters the characters wrote. They really got into the idea. The way they fleshed out their families and home towns provided so many plot hooks. By writing the letters, they basically created their own little corners of...

    Sex and Sexuality in D&D. . .

I think the Paladin story and James' villain are great examples. I also like the gay area of Ptolus. I live in Los Angeles and we have West Hollywood, which would provide some great inspiration were I to try something like that in play. A Ranger in my campaign owned a cottage just outside the...

    RPG Advertisement Help!

Harn is/was such a great series of supplements. The ad brings back lots of great memories. I wish I had more space in my zine, or I'd run the ad for free. I like Harn that much.

Inquest Magazine - Dead after September

I miss magazines like Challenge, Shadis, Scrye and Autoduel Quarterly. So many great projects gone forever. I struggled for 32 issues to publish a print zine in digest format, but it was so expensive to print and mail. I'm glad we still have Dragon and Dungeon, but I really wish there were others.

What do you like about Planescape?

Graphical Presentation I always liked the layout and esign of the Planescape material. It was very unique and had look that matched the content.

What do you do with a drunken player?

Wow. I'm always surprised at drunken gamer stories. I understand being beaned up on coffee or mountain dew, but alcohol...kind of hard to concentrate. That was very polite of you to hold your tongue. You showed retrain when the other fellow clearly did not. I'd let the DM know that you will not...

    D&D has "jumped the shark"

I like D&D. I'll take it any way I can get it. I still play with my Basic D&D rules and I'll play with 4e, too. I don't think that the game is being wrecked, it's just being re-imagined. Maybe I'll like it, maybe I won't. But the geek in me is plain excited about shiny new books.

Do you still use your 3.0 books?

No. It just occurred to me - thanks to your post - that I no longer own any 3.0 books. I've got Basic, 1e, 2e and 3.5, but no 3.0. I wonder what I did with them?
