An Old School Cut and Paste Iridia 85

January 19, 2009; Iridia No. 85; Star Frontiers digest format; $1 Back in '85 Todd M. and I blasted our way through Frontier Space. TSR's Star Frontiers was - and remains - one of my favorite rpgs of all time. In this installment of Iridia, I share a narrative of one of our adventures from so...

World of Warcraft taught me how to DM again.

I agree. In campaigns with a grand plot, I feel as if my character's role is set from the beginning. There's little for me to do other than to fulfill my predetermined task. I prefer sandbox/episodic style games because they offer me more latitude.

    Battlemats

I'm still a big fan of the easel tablets from Staples. You can draw on them without fear of ruining the vinyl. Staples 27" x 34", White with 1" Grid, Easel Pad at Staples® They cost $32, but you get 100 sheets, so that's 32 cents for each sheet of paper. We use about 2 per session, so I think...

What formed your idea of what D&D is to you?

Cool thread idea. Lazy afternoons with Todd and Matt, listening to Oingo Boingo and playing Red Box Basic. Just the three of us, making our own worlds, getting through early adolescence the best we could. For me, gaming will always be about friends who accept you without reservation and being...

    Sign of Things to Come?

"Wizard needs food!" Ha! Thanks for the reminders of such a fun game. I like the idea of healing through food. I think that the next time I play, the PCs will be offered a "Feast of Bountiful Mercy" by the local clerics. It will heal their wounds instead of a boring old Cure Moderate Wounds...

Iridia 83 Is In The Mail

Looking ahead to Iridia 84, I recorded a brief vidcast. It's available at the Iridia website: The Iridia Zine. It's about 2 minutes long and is a rather quick download.

    How is Palladium doing?

I have fond memories of Palladium games, TMNT, RIFTS and Robotech in particular. Like Neuron, the clunkiness of the system is a problem. I'm just not sure I could sell my current group of players on it. Still, I admire the body of work and the dedication of the fans. What a legacy.

Asgard Magazine: Should it be Revived?

Thanks, James! Oh man, Random Order was AWESOME! I still have all of my copies and dearly wish there were more. What a treasure. Regarding Kobold Quarterly, I have also heard some great things. I really need to check it out. Peace, Christian

Asgard Magazine: Should it be Revived?

Thank you so much for the kind words. :) I hope you like Iridia. Through it I've managed to preserve my favorite Scrollworks material while moving forward in new directions. Most people access the zine in .pdf, but I still love sending out print copies. It's old school and a lot more fun than...

Asgard Magazine: Should it be Revived?

I published the Scrollworks zine for 32 issues. Iridia has been on an 83 issue run. As a result I think I have a unique perspective on zines. If you bring back Asgard, perhaps a fanzine approach would be best. By that, I mean have it reflect the views, styles and personality of one fan. You. A...

So What Are Your Favorite D&D Prepaints?

I agree. The Behir is pretty sick. There's a G Cube mini? Oh man, I have to check that out! Dragon minis are awesome. I recently used a Young Red Dragon and it was cool. Dragon fights are so great. EDIT: I'm back. G Cubes are $30 on EBay. No thanks! There are some great tutorials for making...

ENworlder: How long have you been gaming?

That's an excellent point. I run across people from time to time who are really interested in the idea of RPGs. The woman at Staples who printed and bound the most recent issue of my zine was asking a lot of questions. She was intrigued by the imagination and stories that could be told. If my...

ENworlder: How long have you been gaming?

Wow. I am amazed that so many of us here have been rocking the dice since the 80s. Very cool. Keep on keepin' on.

So What Are Your Favorite D&D Prepaints?

Lots of great minis listed so far. One that I really like is the enormous Carrion Crawler from the Against the Giants series. It works as a D&D monster and also as a freaky alien for other games.

Iridia 83 Is In The Mail

Iridia No. 83; AD&D 2e Freeman’s Keep was the home of a brief, 8-10 session AD&D 2e campaign that I ran back in 2000. It was something of a freak fest, but that’s what I was going for. I was living in San Bernardino at the time, which is a miserable pit of despair. The strangeness of the...
