    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Well, the assumption is that large organizations can produce or acquire it at lower costs, thus allowing them to make a profit. But they are bulk traders for a reason. If they want to play at being traders, they are welcome. All prices fluctuate - including list items in "normal" settings, but...

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Indeed - like I said in my first post, I got the idea from 3D printing, which is a similar (though comparatively primitive) technology. Though this Residuum Economy is more primitive still, since it requires skilled people (=ritual casters) to actually create the items, while anyone can use...

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

I'd say with some effort ritual casters can develop new ones.

    Stop being so paranoid

I love springing surprises on the player characters (and the players). But if they constantly check for traps, they obviously won't be surprised by them, even if they miss one. So different approaches are needed...

Justifying high level 'guards', 'pirates', 'soldiers', 'assassins', etc.

I'd rather not justify scaling such foes like that. I think it's rather more interesting once the PCs hit high level if each of them has personal power equivalent to that of a small nation - and then examine the consequences of this. But then again, I have been playing Exalted a lot. ;)

    Mundane vs. Fantastical

"Don't you mean platypus bear?" "No, it just says, 'bear'." "Certainly you mean his pet skunk bear?" "Or his armadillo bear?" "Gopher bear?" "Just, 'bear'." "This place is weird."

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Here's another idea for a residuum source: Ley lines pulsing with primal energies cross their land. Where they cross, there are great places of powers - enchanted forests, bizarre rock formations, and so on. Now humans have figured out how to tap those places - slowly draining them of power...

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Well, I've added this idea to Urbis here (login required to read about "the secret"...). Thanks for inspiring it!

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Well, a few suggestions have been made here, like my nexus towers (though I really like the Soylent Green golems - I have to work them into Urbis somehow...). But I'm open to all the cool ideas you can come up with. It should involve some effort to gather or process, but it also should be easy...

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Well, my assumption is that some organizations are able to figure out how to get those components cheaper. For convenience's sake, let's assume that the costs will stay the same for individuals, but bulk manufacturers will be able to get the components and thus still be able to make a profit...

    Warhammer Fantasy vs. 40k roleplaying

The charts in WFRP 1E came pretty close, though. The ones in WFRP 2E were a bit of a letdown, despite the other mechanical improvements in the game...

Order of the Stick 597 is up!

Well, from how I interpret the oracle, V will attain ultimate magical power - which likely means he is turning into a lich or some other powerful magical being. After all, he has already said "the four right words for all the wrong reasons". Ultimate magical power is now his fate - with all the...

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Not exactly. It still costs effort to get the raw materials - the magical components - and waste products won't do. It still requires skilled people to cast the necessary rituals. Items will still cost money, although people in such a setting will likely have more money on average than in a...

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Suddenly I imagine giant golems shoveling people into the portable residuum converters on their backs... EDIT: Someone needs to stat that golem. Let's say it gives residuum equal to the XP value of the converted creature...

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

Not necessarily a "Garden of Eden" situation - you still need someone to supply the components, and you still need skilled ritual casters to produce the items. And not all economic activities center on physical products. But it would certainly be a lot different from the typical quasi-medieval...

    Setting Idea: The Residuum Economy

I was just writing an Arcana Wiki entry for the technology of "3D Printing", when I had an interesting idea for a D&D setting: Imagine a world where it is possible to create any physical object with the right ritual, with each ritual creating a perfect replica of all the other objects created...

    Cyberpunk RPGs

Transhuman Space together with the Broken Dreams supplement. It's a bit further in the future and more high-tech than the typical cyberpunk game, but otherwise it can capture the mood fairly well.

Goodman Games embraces Call of Cthulhu!!

Get it. It's a massive gazetteer of world locations (mostly real, a few purely Mythos-related) that can be used in CoC locations - or other games set in the real world that focus on uncovering ancient ruins and other places with mystical significance. And it works great as a source of ideas for...
