    D&D General Inherently Evil?

Re: Animated objects vs animated dead. Aren’t there differences? In 3.E, animated dead are healed by negative energy, and lose any material based damage reduction. Animated objects retain their material damage reduction and can be repaired. TomB

D&D 5E (2014) Can you use misty step to arrest a fall?

Re: falls being instantaneous. I would think that actions mid-fall are possible. Trying to grab a small item lodged in the nearby wall. Making a charge attack near the bottom (while still having falling damage at the end). I’m thinking “instantaneous” is only meant to say that no game time is...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

I’m thinking there is a bit of overlapping function. Looking back to 3.5e, a fighter could get extra HP with the toughness feat. Or by putting more points on Con. Which ought to have meant dropping a fighter’s base HP to d8. Or, the base fighter should have d8 base and receive improved...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

On second though … there are lots of strength and mass based martial artists. With training that emphasizes toughness and endurance. I’m thinking a pure martial artist ought to be a kind of fighter, with monk reserved for a mystic warrior. TomB

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Could it be the difference between a “brute” strength and mass based, armored, martial weapon wielding fighter and the more agile, technique based, unarmed or lightly armed, un-armed or lightly armed fighter? Also, rogues (ninjas, at least) have excruciating martial training. Climbing; holding...

He seems to have been behind a push into movies. I found a little more information here: https://www.ign.com/articles/hasbro-ceo-brian-goldner-dies-transformers

D&D General Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner died

The title says it all. See: Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner has died I'm thinking this will appear as a news item, but I haven’t seen one yet. Thx! Tom Bitonti

D&D General D&D Combat is fictionless

Though ... folks can forget or may have never been aware of what a game is like when grids are erased, or when more simultaneous action resolution is used. There is a very big difference! I built a small gaming board using foamcore, flock, and plaster rocks, painted, and with plastic trees...

    Foundation Series (Apple+)

l found the first two episodes to be good. High production values. Good performances. The beginnings of a very large tale. I suspect a shift in the third episode … so the values might not be maintained. And we will have to see if the larger story fulfills the initial promise. TomB

D&D 5E (2014) How does “optimization” change the game?

To follow up: Two kinds of failure can occur. These result from a core system features: Fun is obtained, for the most part, by being successful. Success in turn depends on a combination of character effectiveness and player skill. Character effectiveness is measured against the game’s...

D&D 5E (2014) How does “optimization” change the game?

Hmm, I‘m considering some confounding issues. These are from 3/3.5E. Feats that added background to a character (my character grew up on a fishing boat; he has skill focus swimming), which take away combat focused feats. The consequence is that effectiveness and background are mutually...

Math help: doubles, triples, quadruples on 2-3-4d10

    Those match my calculations: { 4 } 10 { 3 } { 1 } 360 { 2 } { 2 } ((10 x 9) / 2) x ((4 x 3) / 2) : 270 { 2 } { 1 } { 1 } (10 x 9 x 8) x (((4 x 3 / 2 ) x 2) / 2) : 4320 { 1 } { 1 } { 1 } { 1 } 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 : 5040 TomB

Math help: doubles, triples, quadruples on 2-3-4d10

Another problem .. with four numbers, double doubles are possible (2244), (1177), etc. (Obscure note: This problem of double doubles feels related to interesting things that happen with rotations in 4 dimensions, where two independent rotation axis are possible.) TomB

    D&D 5E (2014) How much is 1.000.000 GP?

How about … O Mammon, your gold is ready. As you are appreciating an accurate accounting, so as to know you are not being cheated, and that the dwarves can be shown to be scrupulous in fulfilling their contracts, the official counter has begun counting the delivery. This is of course being...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fallout/Poisonous Environment

So … how technical do you want to get, and, how much do your players know about radiation? Penetrating radiation (gamma and x-rays) will cause harm based on intensity and duration of exposure. Intensity falls off off at the inverse square of the distance from the emitter. Non-penetrating...

    Loki! (spoiler thread)

Also ... the last episode provides much less closure than either WandaVision or Falcon and the Winder Solder. Perhaps that is a consequence of there being a definite second season of Loki. I'm glad that there will be a second season. I've found this first season to be refreshing and...

    Loki! (spoiler thread)

I have to ask ... how does resetting the time-line prevent the events from deviating in exactly the same way what caused them to be reset? It would seem that "deviant" means "not following the desired goal", in which case, folks have free decision making, but are not allowed to meaningfully...

    Loki! (spoiler thread)

+1. Loki has a prescribed role, as described in one of the initial episodes. I’m thinking their deviation from that role creates the deviant. It would seem that the TVA is too narrowly constraining the timeline, and deviations are a normal thing, especially with creatures such as Loki, which...

    Loki! (spoiler thread)

I’m with the idea that the gender of Loki is fluid, and, according to what matters to the TVA, un-important. This is refreshing to have in a series as built-in and not worth drawing attention. And, it makes for interesting discussion re: Loki falling in love with themself. Having the two...

    Loki! (spoiler thread)

I was thinking that pruning was limited in extent — to the region so far affected by the deviant. Which ought to spread at the speed of light, although I can see the comic book effect only counting large effects and being slower. It Seems the amount of time which is pruned before there is a...
