I'd much rather have a generic Oriental Adventures book rather than a campaign setting. Make it like a Player's Handbook, with an assumed setting in the background details, rather than a fully fleshed out setting.
If Planescape had done that well it wouldn't have been canceled. Ditto Darksun...
I think I've been assuming that a character with those feats would have to "swap out" some of his class powers for the other class's powers, like a 3e wizard being allowed to prepare a half dozen cleric spells in his wizard spell slots. That definitely may not be the case.
I'm loving everything I'm hearing. I'm probably going to buy the book, based on what this thread and the other previews have said.
It seems more like an elegant way to get rid of some of the bad parts of 3e multiclassing, while still allowing flexible character concepts.
Some of the things...
Definitely! I wonder if, in a few years, we'll be seeing an Immortals Handbook, for levels 30+, in which characters become demigods or other higher beings. Like the D&D box set, but without the wacky, math-heavy mechanics.
From the sound of things, the decision to make the gift set is relatively recent, probably after they already solicited the core books to distributors. It'll be added to Amazon soon enough.
It's probably because Shadowfell isn't a real word. It sounds fake. And since half of it, "fell" is at best archaic, it doesn't really have much meaning as a compound word either.
"Shadowfell Keep" sounds better because it makes Shadowfell sound like a proper noun, a name, which isn't as...
Points of Light and the new cosmology intrigue me. I want to bring the characters through the wilderness to an ancient temple, which leads them into the elemental chaos.
I also like the sword-and-sorcery-esque ancient tiefling and dragonborn empires.
If they make PC-playable minotaurs, I'd...
And/or binder vestiges.
It may also be possible to create a character like John Constantine, who uses black magic for essentially good causes. Or redeemed formerly-dark people like Angel, or Faust for that matter.
More than anything I want to play a wizard. I long for playing a wizard that doesn't become a useless crossbow-carrier at some point in the day. If a longstanding post-apocalypic Realms game I'm in is going to 4e, my character will become an Eladrin wizard multiclassed into ranger or druid...
Excellent point. Plus, it's just fun in play to seek out & learn new spells.
Plus, it makes sense from a marketing perspective. If characters only learn new powers when they level, and only ever have a limited number, like sorcerers, then there's less incentive to buy books with new powers in...
Based on what the designers have said, the main goal of the FR revamp was to make the setting more accessible, and more fun to play in. Some of that includes the points of light concept, and the new, more gameable cosmology. While they were at it, they make the new rules and race/class...
I see a few reasons.
1) It's a very popular setting, and it's quite well established. It also hasn't had a setting core book since the beginning of 3.0, 8 years ago. So some of it could just be a business decision, since a FR corebook would be a much better immediate seller than a new...
It's telling that even the cover is unimpressive and somewhat cheezy looking.
If they put out the completed trailer, and it's 100 times better than the badly animated teaser trailer, I'll consider watching it. Maybe I'll get it from Netflix, for a good laugh.
I voted for the second choice, though the third option would suit me fine. I want game mechanics names to actually remind me what they do. Flavor is fine, as long as it's also descriptive.
I highly doubt that WotC cares about the homebrew creations of random shmoes on the web. They're...
Considering how much attention the design team has played on making explicit the party roles of the 4 different class roles, I don't think you have much to worry about.
Plus, Rodney Thompson recently had this to say about his playtest group:
Le sigh.
