Rodney Thompson's Playtest Report on Gleemax

We do know that "per day" powers are different things from rituals, based on the scoops from the races & classes book. Per day powers were described as the most powerful effects in the game, while rituals were described as noncombat powers like divinations and item creation. However, we don't...

    Discussion on +x magic items

That's especially true for items that change the "math" of the game, like +x items. If the game is balanced assuming that characters of a certain level have +5 items, then if characters don't have +5 items they'll be 25% less likely to affect creatures that would otherwise be appropriate...

    One setting per year?

At this point, the only old settings that I expect to see are FR, Eberron, and maybe Dragonlance. Considering how much attention the cosmology has been given, I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually saw a new planar setting that draws on the most interesting parts of planescape, but I highly...

New Chris Perkins podcast up on Gaming Steve

... or commuting in my car. I love podcasts. I am fairly picky about the ones I listen to, though, and over half of them are just recorded versions of radio programs. Way too many people don't know how to ask a succinct question.

    A question for WoTC

That sounds about right, NewfieD. Another group of existing gamers is the people who used to play D&D but stopped. Third edition attracted a lot of former gamers who now saw "the new D&D isn't an incoherent mess of arbitrary rules anymore!" and started to play D&D again. No doubt a lot of...

    More about wizards by kunadam

In the Mabinogion, which is about 600-800 years old, many of the wizard types used wands to work their magic. Staves have been around at least since Tolkien, if not before. Orbs have been around for ages as well, in various forms.

    Unified Progression - why level/2?

That does make a lot of sense. I hope that all rolls/bonuses are now on the same "scale", so it becomes reasonable and balanced to make skill rolls vs. will/reflex defense, and things like that. The one mystery is how AC bonuses from armor will work. I suspect it'll work a lot like it does in...

    Quick Question: Who's in charge?

I vaguely remember James Wyatt being the head of the "story team." I might be mistaken about that though.

Unintended(?) Consequence of No More X-Mas Tree?

It seems to me that getting rid of the Christmas tree effect will have the opposite effect of what you're predicting. The distinction that in 3e, many of the magic items had nothing to do with the "low fantasy" vs "high fantasy" feel. Most magic items were just boosts which didn't influence...

    Taller Halflings

Yes. And make them reasonably proportioned, not like tall skinny humans magically shrunk down with a shrink-o-matic ray.

Will you still need to take the Feats?

One of the playtests said that Int is very important for Warlords. I also expect Int and Wis to be important for Wizards. You're assuming that [w] includes the strength bonus to damage. The article described it as "your base weapon's damage", so it might not include strength.

    More about wizards by kunadam

I suspect that the coolness of implements will depend entirely on how they're used. If all spells are divivided into staff spells, orb spells, etc., or the implement is required to cast the spell at all, that would be a bit dorky. But if the implements are essentially feats or talents that...

Skills, and the unified progress + bonuses

We still don't know how skills are going to work. Some have suggested that they work like they do in SWSE, with a universal progression of +1/2 levels, +5 for skill training, and +5 for skill focus. Some others think that we'll keep skill ranks in some way. I wonder if we'll see some...

    Unified Progression - why level/2?

That's an excellent point. It keeps the relative power level between the classes the same at all classes. In 3e, a first level elf wizard can be the best archer or swordsman in tha game, while at 15th level that wizard is so utterly useless at combat that he should never even try. It fits...

    More about wizards by kunadam

Overall I like it a lot. Splitting powers into combat powers and rituals seems to be what the designers were talking about when they said they were "siloing" powers. I'm not sure how I feel about restricting the focus of Wizard powers. On one hand, I like wizards to be potentially able to do...

How do you feel about Fluff in your Crunch?

I want that option too. I like evocative spell names. The names we've heard so far aren't evocative; they sound boring and formulaic. How telling is it that a few lines of Javascript can accurately parody all the names we've heard so far. I also demand that all game mechanics names actually...

    D&D 4E D&D 4e Feat Name Generator

Drunken Bugbear Arbiter - I think I've argued in front of him in law school moot court. Crazy Spider Punch - I just love this one. Given Mr. Nancy in Anansi Boys, I suspect it involves drinking a small glass of gin, dancing a soft-shoe, and while the opponent is distracted, hoofing him in the...

    Unified Progression - why level/2?

This seems to be the crux of it. The designers have said that monsters remain usable over a broader range of CRs than in 3e, where a difference of two or three levels made a huge impact on how difficult the monster is.

Races & Classes details from the WotC boards

They may have decided to keep one of the sources of pacts back to release in a future supplement. Or maybe they combined the stars and vestiges pacts.
