    What's your DM Shtick?

My campaigns always have some sort of intelligent animal critters, whether they're druid-awakened Talking Beasts, gene-engineered "underpeople", anime catgirls, whatever. Unfortunately, they also always peter out inconclusively. I don't think I've EVER gotten to use a big, dramatic...

    balancing the Gnoll

IMC, I give gnolls a bite attack (1d6, same as a hyena or wolf), and allow them to acquire the Scent ability by expending a feat slot.

Yet Another Damage Reduction (Playing now please help)

This is a 3.0/3.5 rule change. In 3.0, the natural attacks of a creature with DR bypass that DR, regardless of amount: a satyr (DR 5/cold iron) performing a headbutt could bypass DR 15/cold iron completely (not just 5 points of it). In 3.5, this is only true of alignment DR, not material DR...

    Reverse Polymorph

Finger of Death (I think you know which finger, too) Bestow Wound Cheat Entice Gift ("Gimme. Now.") Jump Bear's Endurance Bull's Strength Dominate Person Blindness (somatic component: removal of loincloth. "Aiiee, my eyes, my eyes!") ;)

    Familiar - Tough encounter?

I should point out that in the Spellstitched template, the "per day" numbers are divided among the abilities, NOT each. So, the spellstitched raven could use mage armor 2x/day and ray of enfeeblement 2x/day, not 4x/day apiece. And the division is set at creation, he can't choose to, say, use...

What kind of things would one encounter inside a tree?

MM III has the Wood Woad (rant: should be wood WOSE, dangit - "wose" = man or person, "woad" = blue dye. \rant), and the Woodling template. Flocks of kenku, aaracokra, or other bird-critters in the branches. Since it's a mystic, symbolic, time-tree, maybe somewhere in the tangled maze below it...

    Yaun-Ti Anethema?

Without getting specific: CR 18, Huge, regenerating, psionics, spell resistance, lots of other resistances/immunities, beefed-up versions of all the usual yuan-ti powers ... seriously bad news, especially if you play them according to their genius intelligence (multiple back-up plans in place...

Your favorite class and race and other things.

Favorite race: centaur, baby! Four on the floor! (As if you couldn't guess from my avatar.) Second is probably lizardfolk: not the strong-but-stupid alligator-men from the MM, but fast, aglile, and smart - think Jurassic Park velociraptors with hands and weapons (the "tall grass" scene from JP...

Drow Mute Mime Bard, and other Madness

Sounds like the owner/barker of the Moulin Rouge (Ziegfield? Ziegler? something with a Z): "EV-rybody CAN-can!" The one problem with the mute bard is almost all bard spells have a Verbal component. Yeah, you can take Silent Spell, but then your spellcasting is even less effective than the...

    Splatbooks to Beware of?

Shivering Touch, page 104 Touch spell, 3d6 Dex damage, no save, but spell resistance:Yes. Next on the page is Shivering Touch, Lesser, 1rst level, 1d6 Dex, otherwise identical. Of course, this is the same volume that contains Bonechill, a spell that freezes solid corporeal undead (and only...

    Non-nature fey

In the comic book Vogelein, the title character is a wind-up fairy (in D&D terms she'd be a sprite with the Clockwork Creature template from Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary), who must be wound every 48 hours - but is unable to reach her own key-socket (between her shoulderblades) and so must beg...

Does Speak with Dead compel an honest answer?

I believe the intent is to keep the PCs from cutting off a pinky finger, leaving the rest of the corpse behind, and then casting speak with dead on the finger whenever they need info. If they want the info, they either have to do their interrogation on the spot, or lug the heavy corpse along.

    China Mieville on D&D

Well, I've read all three Bas-Lag books, and CM's earlier work, King Rat (fairly interesting take on wererats, BTW). I found them somewhat mixed. There were a lot of cool ideas - and some scenes that just dragged. Hopefully this is "new writer-itis" and he'll learn more consistency as he...

    Sandstorm

    The Stealth and Detection distances seem off as well. Sandstorm gives: Badlands: 4d6 x 10 ft Barren Waste: 6d6 x 20 ft (6d6x10 in dunes) Evaporated sea(salt flat/silt sea): 2d12 x 10 ft Evaporated sea(dry sea): 2d8 x 10 ft Glass sea(intact): 2d10 x 10 ft Glass sea(shattered): 2d6 x 10 ft...

My poor LBEG - what went wrong?

So you have a CR 5 necromancer (wizard or cleric? cleric is tougher as they can bolster the undead, which forces the PC cleric to use more than one turning attempt to nuke all of them), and a handful of zombies (too low-CR to affect the EL) for an EL of 5. Versus a party of 6 3-4th level...

History: The actual time it took to create a harness.

Yes, find your local Society for Creative Anachronism chapter and ask them. From my time in the SCA, I seem to vaguely recall a time frame of 3 months being quoted - of course, that's working on it evenings and weekends, putting full time labor into it would be shorter, but the "3 months" was...

Lyre of building, what can i build in an hour?

Presumably you have to somehow visualize what you want the lyre to do. for anything more complicated than a simple ditch, rampart, or palisade, I'd require rolls against Craft(carpentry), Craft(stonework), and/or Knowledge(architecture), or the resulting work is shoddy. A dwarven...

    How would you rule this?

At first glance, I'd use the rules for throwing heavy objects - after all, you're essentially throwing yourself.

    4-Dimensional Objects

That is definitely a cool site. I just spent about three hours playing with it. In particular if you look under Polyhedra, you can download cut-and-fold paper templates for all the dice shapes - including a d12 that doesn't use pentagons, several d24 shapes, a d48, several d60s... Not that any...
