Frostburn: To buy or not to buy?

Judging by the adventure in the latest Dungeon, the answer is YES. I admit, the "top Ten" list had me going "feh", too. But after actually seeing some of the new rules in use in the "Raiders of the Black Ice" adventure, I'm more hopeful. The $35 price is a bit of a speedbump, though...

Orcish Wand of Wonder (please read Olgar, Stormrunner, Chimera and CL)

Target burps loudly and repeatedly for one full round - game-effect identical to the Hideous Laughter spell. Wielder produces a thunderous "posterior breeze" - all within 30' radius must make Fort save (10+1/2 wielder's level+Con mod) or be deafened for 1d6 rounds. In addition, a stinking...

Getting thrown into an Iron Maiden

40 feet? That's a considerable distance. Consider simplifying things by just having the giant Bull Rush the PC into the iron maiden. Being thrown/pushed into the IM should do immediate damage, even before the lid slams, as the PC is violently contacting a bed of spikes. Say 5d4 or thereabouts...

Gnoll and lizardfolk challenge ratings (is there a difference?)

Personally, IMC I give gnolls at least a bite attack (they've got big frickin' fangs, fergoshsake!), and the option to take Scent as a feat. In fact I made their bite attack 1d8 (one step better than usual for a Medium creature), since hyenas are known for their exceptionally strong jaws.

    Chaotic. Not Silly.

Go out and find some back issues (or bound collections) of the comic book The Invisibles - these guys are Xaositects in all but name.

Do your minotaurs have hooves or feet?

Something about having sex with a horse, IIRC. I don't remember if she was supposedly crushed to death, or torn open, or what. Obviously she didn't read her Greek mythology, or couldn't find a trustworthy carpenter. On minotaurs, the myth says "head of a bull" but doesn't mention feet one way...

What to do? (Campaign Ideas needed)

Well, the lost flying city is an obvious "appropriate location" - one of the four missing heroes, the one who went north, was looking for the ruins of the city. The "four must be done as one" is a cool idea, but it means the current set of PCs may also have to split up. "Clues in four different...

    Character discussion

Centaurs. Four on the floor, baby! I also play lizardfolk a lot. But I hate the weird, humanoid-skull faces 3.x art gives them. My lizardfolk are more like humanoid velociraptors.

    Looking for Info on India

You might also want to check out the Complete Guide to Rakshasas from Goodman Games (US$13). It includes a lot of the mythic background behind the critters, as well as rules for yakshas (half-rakshasas), yogis, and a chakram-throwing prestige class of rakshasa-hunters. (Though for some reason...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Called Shots - Hows it work?

D&D's system of BAB/AC/hp is abstract enough that "called shots" don't really fit well. If you introduce the targeting of specific body parts, then you have to worry about "Does this helm have a full-face visor or just a noseguard?", "Does my chain shirt cover my arms to the wrists or only to...

    Silly Monsters

Like the Japanese monster that looks like a folded umbrella with one eye and one big foot, and a tongue? Fortunately that one hasn't made it into D&D yet. But I've seen it show up in at least three different comics now...

    WotC Miniatures

Well, I paint metals(A), and I also buy the plastic(B). (A) has three big advantages: I get only the ones I want, they're very detailed, and I can paint them however I want. Three big disadvantages: price, weight, and fragility. (B) has three big advantages: price, sturdiness, and time. Three...

    S4: Tsojcanth?

Remember that First Edition tends to throw huge numbers of low-level opponents at a party. Flipping through my copy of the original, in the outdoor areas we have, among other encounters, a group of 70 goblins and another group of 81 hobgoblins. This module also marks the first appearance of a...

Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh: Any suggestions?

Or do let them jump to the conclusion, but let the PCs know that they are, indeed, jumping. Have them be typical bureacrats: stubborn, self-important, and narrow-minded. Have them be very snooty towards the PCs (who are, after all, just a rag-tag band of hired mercenaries, whereas the council...

This is a good puzzle - except I can't solve it!

Another door variant: A game show host shows you three identical doors, and informs you that one leads to a prize and the other two cause you to instantly lose all money you have won on the show so far. He asks you to pick one. After you pick, he opens one of the other two doors, revealing a...

    Special attack actions and grapples

I would use common sense (something all rules lawyers hate). ;) If Chris has successfully grappled Alice, then anything which physically moves Chris (Trip, Bull Rush, levitate) moves Alice too, unless Chris chooses to let go. If Chris is Tripped, Alice falls prone too. If Chris is Bull...

    Stats of a Triple-Headed Flail

Dragon #303, page 32: Hydraflail: exotic weapon, 40gp, 1d8, crit 20/x3, 10lb, +4 to disarm. Real World, a multi-headed flail produces something of a "shotgun" effect, spreading force/damage over a larger area. Your chance to hit goes up a little, but armor penetration sucks. Since a flail is...

    Racial Epithets

Lizardfolk IMC call humans "frog-monkeys": "monkey" is pretty obvious, "frog" because of their soft, moist skins (lizardfolk don't sweat). In response, humans use "lizzies", "slit-eyes", or "two-prongs" (male reptiles have two, look it up).

[Your char name] what is best in life?

Actually I believe the quote is "Hot water, soft toilet paper, and good dentistry." (Terry Pratchett's Cohen the Barbarian) Stormrunner: Galloping naked through a thunderstorm, getting thoroughly and enthusiastically humped by a couple of handsome stallions, and sharing a good meal with friends.

    Using Familiars in Combat

Summoned animals of the same type can be as effective as mirror image. Use those pipes of the sewers and send your rat familiar in with the horde. Attacked by a dozen rats, the opponent knows one of them is a familiar but one rat looks much like another...
