    D&D 5E (2014) Making Monsters Interesting!!

Yes, the monsters badly need work. 90% of them are just differently-sized HP + basic attack packs now. If you're going to have combats, I don't see how everyone just repeating 'roll to hit, roll damage' is a worthwhile investment of time. Even if you want to 'just get it out of the way fast'...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

Still, no. Your change puts more onto the GM, asking every turn 'hey, will you :):):):) my class feature over by having my beast run from every fight?'. And CR 1/4 beast is still weak, only leaving a few valid options, and this still has the ambiguous 'get a new beast' phrasing... I think you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

Yeaaaah, this. It also has a ton of implications for non-combat, because the assumption that you have to hand-hold the animal companion every second of its life means... it won't be able to do much there, either. 'It takes no actions on its turn without you shouting at it' is pretty damning...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

Missed a word there. The word being 'giant'. Oh look, I misremembered, the snake is +6 to hit, not just +4.

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

I think it bears pointing out, that a 5th-level Druid can Conjure Animals, which gets them 8 x CR 1/4 critters who act independently... Which, using Giant Poisonous Snakes, would mean 8 x +4 1d4+4+3d6 (save for half) coming in. It is concentration, and takes up their highest slot for the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

Beastmaster sucks, but... Animal barding: start with chain AC 16 for 300g, end with plate AC 18 for 6000g. Once you add the proficiency to that, you are going into respectable 21+ territory. Currently, the absolute best animal option is Giant Poisonous Snake, with 10ft reach and 3d6 poison...

D&D 5E (2014) I for one hope we don't get "clarification" on many things.

That is damn well put. Though rather than say Mearls is wrong, I'd say he is spouting bull manure to save face.

    D&D 5E (2014) Animal Companions & Mounted Combat confusion

You could let your mount act independently while you're on its back, but... the Ranger animal companion is made of suck - since it cannot do anything without you holding its hand, it also would not do anything when acting independently.

D&D 5E (2014) For cantrips is "level" level or class level?

Yes. But he could just as well be 2 levels higher in Paladin, and be attacking twice in melee for at least 1d8+1d8+5+magicweapon/fightingstyle/smites. This just makes it a valid ranged option for him, IMO.

    D&D 5E (2014) So...warlocks?

Because it has no save, adds +d6 damage to every hit, and lasts at least the entire combat (Concentration willing). I'd say that's pretty damn good for a lv1 spell. Bonus point for it giving disadvantage to certain stat checks, though it's a bit ambiguous exactly what those entail. Which is...

D&D 5E (2014) For cantrips is "level" level or class level?

Yeah, 2 levels in Warlock can be very fun. Telepathy and communication with anything from lv1 onwards. Or temphp every time you kill anything (just Warlock level + Chamod, but still). Hex spell has no save, and gets you extra damage on every hit, and you can bounce it from target to another on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger

You're not the only one. Colossus Slayer looks great, since someone's always wounded - it's just been named stupidly, it should be Predator something. And Horde Breaker gives you an extra attack, which is a big enough of a deal that you might even want to Ready your attack to go off 'when two...

Someone mind summarizing the why? Because there's no excuse for stumbling on that yet again.

D&D 5E (2014) Beast Master Ranger List of Animal Companions

Thanks for the list. For those looking at it, let me cut to the chase: overall best options are giant badger (if multi-attack works as animal attack), or giant poisonous snake (because +3d6 poison damage on every hit, half on save) Companion AC doesn't really matter, once you can buy barding...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rogue expertise and Perception

'Passive perception' only gives one hit in Basic PDF, but 'passive check' gets the right section.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rogue expertise and Perception

EDITED: Actually, not true! Page 175 PHB, passive checks. You get the double proficiency to passive Perception, as makes sense. Without that, Rogues would be the worst scouts...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e question: dual hand crossbows

There is no point in dual-wielding hand crossbows, alas. You can get two attacks off with the same hand crossbow with the feat, though. It doesn't say anywhere you need a free hand to load, so it should work for hand crossbows, or otherwise longbows cannot reload either (seeing how they're...

    D&D 5E (2014) Return of the Fighter/Mage ... Swords & Sorcery characters

Feat tax to get a subclass to work, and that cast + attack comes at the cost of all your extra attacks... still fails to impress me. Still, unlike Pally, EK has an extra reason to pick Warcaster (because weapons in hand and Shield spell as reaction), which combos nicely with his Con save...
