I'm confused by what you mean here. When you say "That's not what D&D is," are you referring to the fact that most monsters are from European-based folklore? If so, there's no reason you can't add new and different monsters--in fact, that's been expected ever since the early days.

That's what I don't get, though. How are the "theater kids" ruining D&D for these people? Not enough action, or are they worried that non-optimized characters will drag the party down, or what?

No reason you can't put magic types (back) into your own campaign, especially if you're playing in a homebrew world.

That explains why they felt entitled to do it, but not why they assumed their customers would be happy about it.

So yeah, they were planning on taking away what people already had (on their character sheets). Why on earth would they assume that was a good idea?

Why would they think people would be happy to lose access to the older stuff, though? That's what I don't get. (I don't use D&D Beyond, but I gather the problem was that they were going to make the 2014 stuff completely disappear?)
