It didn't require the app. I just viewed it on the web. But I was always reading it on an actual computer; not sure whether that would have worked on a phone.

Here's a book-length third-party option, Harper's Tale. I backed the Kickstarter, which was raising money for Friends of Kids with Cancer. It's meant to be fairly kid-friendly, but I'm sure you could darken it up if that's more to your taste...

Xanathar's, for sure. My most-used third-party book is probably the Tome of Beasts from Kobold Press.

Isn't that what gaming has mostly always been about? Yeah, TPKs happen, but they're far from the majority of cases. Most of the time, the party defeats the BBEG and everybody wins. And it's supposed to be a fun social time. Of course you don't want feelings to get hurt, because that's not fun...

I'd never even heard of this one before, much less run it, but I looked it up and it sounds very cool!

I am currently running a high-level, no-magic-items game. The players accepted that without a murmur, but they balked when I considered also making it a no-feats game during the design phase. So for my group at least, feats are apparently considered more necessary.
