    Official Nostalgia Thread (thread necromancy)

did anybody mentioned that combat rounds lasted 1 minute? it made perfect sense, to me! what about armours giving you different AC depending on your opponent's weapon type? (logical, but man, it would have taken me ages to do all the work all the time...) or monsters not have saving throws...

Real tale of Old School feel?

i couldn't go beyond the first three posts... if the author states that the adventure doesn't make any sense to him and he still running it, he is the one with the problem... everybody is free to waste his time as he want, but if he wants to prove some wacky point by doing it, well, good luck!

Real tale of Old School feel?

you might be right, but it's difficult for me to say... if the module doesn't say what to do next, but i still understand the basic plot, i will come up with my agenda with no problem. on the other hand, if i don't know what the basic plot is, i would say that problem derives from the general...

Real tale of Old School feel?

my bad. you are right. the problem is that i take it so much for granted that i would throw a railroad adventure in the garbage bin without even finishing to read it. no surprise i never liked dragonlance... :P well, i suppose that, for quasqueton thatlack of background made the module...

Real tale of Old School feel?

it is indeed. i never doubted it. well, maybe it's because i'm not a native english speaker, but "absurd" is not inflamatory, to me. if i would have said "stupid", for example, i would have been more offensive. more over, i thought it was clear by the general tone of my message that i wasn't...

Real tale of Old School feel?

being coherent and capable or writing in english (or whatever language one chooses to write in) has nothing to do with module design, in my opinion, but with... well, the ability of writing something that could be sold, be it a module for an RPG, a short story, or a physics book. :) allowing...

    I write workhorse products . . . Should I?

all things being equal, i would say (knowing nothing of the economics of the RPG design market) that workhorse product would sell more. moreover, simply because you are not writing a 300 campaign sourcebook, it doesn't mean that you can't have your say on deities, calendars, mysterious places...

Real tale of Old School feel?

i found absurd that you could die at the ghost banquet, without having a clue of what was going to happen. i thought that the whole start of the adventure (in the fog, with the escaped mule dying, to show the players that they were forced to go in) was absurd (that was loooooong before the mists...

Real tale of Old School feel?

you rule. by definition, as you can see, there is no such thing as an objectively good design. or, better, there *could* be, if you knew what the designer was aiming at. if castle amber was intended to be a "realistic" module in a far away land, it was designed by a monkey. if it was intended...

Real tale of Old School feel?

i wish that sometimes the newer adventures added a bit more freedom to customization to the DM. just to make an example: having to come up with a reason why a group a wandering wizards appears here or there might give you the opportunity to develop a lot of material for your campaign (maybe they...

Real tale of Old School feel?

and some of the new ones are equally atrocious, too. what's your real point? you made some interesting ones about designing, but none of them had anything to do with old school. are you saying that not all the old material is great? well, you're not making a big discovery: every gamer i have...

'Old School' Experiences with D&D 3.5

maybe adding some other feat to make them cool? i've been looking in the rule section of the forum, and i found a good reworking of the fighter class (i think the author was a Gaz?) the problem is that not only i am afraid to unbalance the game, but also to make it "uncool" for most players...

'Old School' Experiences with D&D 3.5

i believe that you are right. that said, during the night (!) i decided that, in order to run the type of game i would like, with the rules that i like, i would have to do too much homework. it wouldn't be too much hassle, maybe, if i was sure that a new edition wasn't approaching any time soon...

'Old School' Experiences with D&D 3.5

i think one could safely omit attacks of opportunity and live happily even after, but if the same approach is taken with feats, then some classes become obviously weaker than others. who would play a fighter, if there are no feats? in previous editions, fighters could specialize, they had...

settings, support and your buying dollar!

I'm curious about your approach to published settings and their support... how important it is, for you as customer, that D&D/ d20 has a big number of recognisable published settings? how important it is to have support material (adventures, regional sourcebooks, whatever) for those settings...
