    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

There are a lot of Char Op minmaxed builds that do not revolve around combat. Bards with +40 in diplomacy, unbeteable stealth detectors or whatever. There are minmaxed all-around builds too. Anything you try to acomplish can be done better or worse, and thus can be maximized. Sure, you dont...

    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

I'm not sure why you think your own bold claims from your own ivory tower are any better than his, but I'd like to point a few videogame mechanics that have improved RPG. For example, the Dragon Age RPG is quite good, and D&D 3e borrowed a lot from videogames. Whirlwind feat was sued to be...

    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

While it is true that Char Op messageboards and copycat builds from internet are a post 3.X edition and beyond, I'm positive about the fact of BECMI or ADnD editions being older that internet forums development is a major contributor of this ;-)

We need to stop short changing thieves on equipment

If cutting the lock and breaking it without silence is an option, then a warhammer or battleaxe, and the hardness rule for attacking objects can do the trick too.

    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

While i agree on most of your post, this is not right. There are as much freedom to build your char in WoW as the game allows. Some builds are mechanically better, and become cookie cutter, but the same goes about RPG. CharOp forums are full of cookie cutter builds, and advice about trap feats...

A call for rampant speculation and suggestions on classes.

This is the point. If you give them powerful poisons, and base the class around them, they'll be rather overpowered in a human based campaign like The Game of Thrones, but basically useless in a undead heavy Ravenloft campaign, being somewhat balanced in a more mixed campaign were you have a bit...

A call for rampant speculation and suggestions on classes.

Problem with that is you either give assasins poison the ability to affect everything (which causes suspension of disbelief issues) or you make it a gimped class against 50% of the monsters (undeads, demons, devils, constructs, elementals, several outsiders... )

We need to stop short changing thieves on equipment

They arethere, under "thieving tools". Im not sure we need to specify them any more than we need to explicitly mention bandages, poultices, salves, scalpels and ointments in a healer's kit

If we have specialities, why do we need a plethora of classes?

i disagree. You can make a pseudo paladin by giving a fighter the some cleric especialty, but you get much better granularity if you give to the paladin class a knight especialty, or a peasant hero especialty, or a crusader, or zealot, or inquisitor. Even if you can still use the fighter with...

    Ranger Design Idea: Contingencies

I think stuff like traps is better left for exploration pillar. If you make it a tactic combat power, you give up too much ssuspension of disbelief. For example, you give the player set up traps or deffensive perimeter. What if the PC is in the middle of an empty room? Or in the air plane? What...

    Weapons table issues

I dont think spears should be as good as swords. The only, reason they were common in army is because they were cheap, easy to learn, and work in formations. Any fighter that could afford wore a sword, until plate became dominant and warhammer and flagelled warmaces started to take their place...

    Weapons table issues

The problem is DND take his warhammer picture from Mjolnir. Which was used by a *god* with unhuman strength. That's not really a weapon for normal people. Real warhammers looked like this: This is a warhammer:

    Weapons table issues

Roman legions count as "spear and javelin" in my opinion, using your own description of pikes, spears and javelins. Greek hoplites actually are divided between "spear and Shield" and "pike and shield". The Alexander Phalanx used a Sarissa, which is waaaaay longer than the 8' you suggest as...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

I support the CS as fighter only. Rogues, Paladins, Rangers, Warlords and Monks should have their own magic beans

    New Backgrounds/Specialities

Valiant last stands work better increasing AC (like the Dwarven Defender). Boromir died, actually :P. If you use the film as a visual reference, he dies almost as soon as he is hit. He lasted a lot, in the meanwhile, because the orcs weren't able to hit him

You know what would end all of the arguing and fighting?

Because they WANT you to invest in those books again. Their wages and salaries come from that. It's a business, not a non-profit organization.

It's the best way so far.

Ashigaru used spears and no shield. So did several europeans.

Is a storm coming RE: skills and feats?

They can go and make a la carte having less feats/powers. For example, if you go a la carte, you get 1 feat every 4 levels. OR you might take a background, which gives you 1 feat every 3 levels, but they are set on stone.
