Mearls Blog: PHB2 is his best ever

Actually, his comments echo my feelings about 4e core -- that the need to get it "right" caused the designers to play it too safe, stay well within the lines and not push the engine at all. The supplementary material, such as Martial Power and many Dragon articles, is FAR more...

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

It is worth noting, by the way, that people didn't "trust" game developers in the 1970s either. Many of the first wave of RPGs were, in essence, critques of the perceived flaws of D&D. And there were ENDLESS battles over all of Gygax's pronouncements about the "right" way to play, they just take...

Mearls Blog: PHB2 is his best ever

I generally tend to believe that: a)The newest thing I've written is my best work ever. (Or at least as good) b)The newest thing I've written is utter and complete crap and everyone will hate it and why did I ever think I could write, I hate myself and everything I've done. If you do not...

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

Wasn't 4e supposed to free us from the terrors of the character optimization board and the need for "system mastery"? Seriously, I hope he takes advantage of the ability to respec at every level. His Wisdom won't be at +1 until, what, 8th level? My own character is also "sub par" according to...

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

I think it was when game design articles started beginning with "According to our marketing surveys..." and began including bafflegab like "enhancing the core play experience". Gary never felt like he was expecting to be taken seriously. He was the crazy old uncle ranting on about Gandalf and...

What was so bad about the Core 2e rules? Why is it the red-headed stepchild of D&D?

My feelings? Bland, dumbed-down, simplified, whitewashed. I was turned off the instant I saw the books -- huge type font, lots of whitespace, helpful little icons everywhere, like the pictures of the food on the cash registers at fast food places. The actual game content kept almost all the...

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

I was wrong; he took MM and Thunderwave, which is where his 10 Wis really shines. :) I think his Encounter must be the icy one.

No. You can do that as a minor action, can't you? Hmmm...

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

Which is most of them. :) I admit, we do need to work on tacticals. In our last game, in a mansion, we spread out to look for a room and so triggered several encounters, and we had people running around from room to room instead of focus firing. In most cases, though, if the wizard had a clear...

    D&D 4E Discussing Movement in 4e

The movement rules pretty much only apply in battle, and we can safely assume you're not running on a track where no one's trying to kill you. The numbers aren't so wonky as to cause a major disconnect, at least not for me. Now, the carrying capacities of war elephants...

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

No, I have an 18 Str and he has an 18 int. I have twin bastard swords (+3 proficiency bonus). +4 Str +3 weapon prof==+7. +8 when we 'ding'. :) That's nice, he's an 18 int, 10 Wis Half-elf, pumped Charisma to be the party diplomat. (I pumped mine for Intimidate, I'm a bad ass mofo). I think...

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

Party wizard's magic missile +4 vs. Reflex, 2d4+4 damage. My twin strike: +7 vs AC, twice, 1d10 damage. I usually hit at least once, and while my average damage is lower, it's a lot more consistent. +4 vs. +7 is a really big difference at low levels, and Ref. defense isn't usually THAT much...

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

The wizard in our 4e game is stunningly ineffectual. I think the "Nerf wizards!" meme went way too far. We have a melee-heavy party (rogue, ranger, paladin, wizard, bard) and we are in an urban campaign, which means a lot of tight alleys, small rooms, and interior spaces. Slowing enemies doesn't...

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

As bagels and lox. I'm running one. He kicks ass.

Two rule questions from last night's game...

a)Can you take a Move action, and then a Charge action, to basically move twice your speed and then make a basic attack? My interpretation was that you could; Charge is a Standard action which includes a move component, and doesn't negate or remove your Move action for the round; there are no...

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

It will be a long time before I run a 4e epic game, but I'm quite used to my Brilliant Encounters falling to pieces before the cleverness of the players in every other game I've played, from GURPS to 3e. A new and exciting way of having them turn the game around wouldn't bother me much.

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

Shrug. At 20th level, PCs ought to start having these kinds of world-warping abilities. One of my issues with 4e at release was that higher tiers were very much like lower tiers, just with bigger numbers. Something like this is something which really sets apart higher-level adventuring. Epic...

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

Uhm... no. Things come OUT of Pokemon balls. Like 3.5e Paladin mounts. I personally, find the "world in a bottle" concept 15 kinds of kick-ass, and I like the fact they're going beyond "+X to attack rolls/defenses and once a day you can do something marginally useful" with magic items.
