WotC to Revise D&D 4th Edition GSL and SRD

Doesn't matter, the OGL says "You can use any version of this document." Boy, if only someone had thought that might be possible back when the OGL was first released, and asked Wizards if this would be acceptable or permissable. It would be a common question, possibly even frequently asked, so...

    New Rituaaaals

Well, there's a well thought out response. Hard to argue with that. The idea probably sucks, too. And it's lame, as well. Of course, now every class has rituals... Uhm...how does "Expend time and effort and expense to prepare one ritual ahead of time" equal "being able to cast rituals at a...

WotC to Revise D&D 4th Edition GSL and SRD

No, but it can be a lot easier to get it right -- or less wrong -- if you listen to the people telling you "Hey, you know, the target's OVER THERE." Insert: Dead horse about the public development of the OGL vs. the private development of the GSL. I greatly appreciate, support, and applaud the...

    New Rituaaaals

Maybe YOU don't want to go back... As for the utility of it...uhm...you get to use it once, and it costs you 7,000 gold. I'd call a delayed casting of it more of an "In case of emergency" than a "Rogue, stay home, we don't need you". But think about the other circumstances you'd want to use it...

New errata posted, stealth changes official

They fixed Stalwart Guard! Yay! (I kept asking people exactly how this ability was supposed to work as a 'Martial' power, and people kept remembering urgent appointments in distant cities...as written originally, anyone near you when you used the power got a bonus to their defense even when...

    New Rituaaaals

It's called "Wizard's Escape" not "Wizard's Sneak Into The Tower". :) Like I said, I have no trouble thinking of ways many of these can be useful even with the casting time limits; it's just that many would be MORE useful without them, and not in a "I win the combat!" kind of way. While I...

    New Rituaaaals

How about this: Store Ritual Prerequisite: Ritual Caster Benefit: You can perform a ritual and then 'hold' it, so that the ritual does not truly complete until later. There are many limits to this: It must be a ritual recorded in your ritual book. It must be of the same, or lower, level than...

    New Rituaaaals

If that's wrong, I don't want to be right. The temptation to run a 4e game with only Martial classes + ritual magic is strong.

    New Rituaaaals

Nice stuff, as I've come to expect from Dragon. A few quibbles... Who needs Fastiduousness when you've got Prestidigitation? Preservation (and similar rituals) are very cool, but they hearken back to a more simulationist game; since the core philosophy of 4e is "Get to the adventure!", it's...

WotC to Revise D&D 4th Edition GSL and SRD

Barring a one-in-a-billion long shot, just about anything you can do to earn money will earn you more money than RPG writing. Do it for the love, and consider the money an added bonus. And try to have a spouse with good health insurance.

It is now. :) This is good news. Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.

At-Will for Fighters -- Please critique

Interesting thought. But the same argument could be made about using a shield -- it makes you harder to hit. Besides, you still get to whack them if they shift or attack anyone else. Also, no (current) striker would likely be using a 2-handed axe. I do not see Defenders as *wanting* to be hit...

At-Will for Fighters -- Please critique

Thanks, you're right. It's Str vs. AC, I will edit it. The theme I plan to develop through this power set is Con based, reflecting the idea of toughness and durability. Would [W]+Con be too weak, since, for most fighters, Con is a secondary stat?

At-Will for Fighters -- Please critique

OK, this grew out of an idea I had -- why not "spell books" for martial characters? That is, in Ye Olden Dayse of D&D, one of the greatest treasures a wizard could find would be the unique spellbook of some long dead mage, containing special and rare spells no one else had. It occured to me...

    Broken? The popsicle/marshmellow attack

You have to use a very specific sequence of powers to get something which doesn't become useful until level 30, when the campaign is pretty much over...meh. Meanwhile, on your way there, you've burned a lot of feats into a power you can only use 1/encounter, instead of taking feats which enhance...

    [Adamant Entertainment] Villainomicon: Preference?

I'd prefer a single book. Usually, the only time I will use a pregen is if I am REALLY desperate for time and/or ideas, and being able to flip through a book for inspiration, or to find some stats I can file the serial numbers off of, is a great help. To buy a single pre-made villain, I'd need...

    A flaw in the system

Nothing heroic about guaranteed success. I see this in 3e and I don't expect it to be different in 4e -- you weigh the odds and you make the decisions. Sure, the daily might be less likely to work on the big bad...but so are all your other powers, and they're less effective when they DO work...

Necromancer Games NOT going with current GSL.

Then you'd end up with Book of Nine Swords. ("Quick! Use Hopping Turnip Attack!" "No, that won't work on golems! I have to use Fist Of The Inverted Bagel!") Thank all the gods that most of that stuff was ultimately dropped from 4e, despite threats to the contrary.

Necromancer Games NOT going with current GSL.

It doesn't. If WOTC had said, at Gencon '07, "Screw you guys...we're going home.", I think most people would have just said "So it goes". Instead, WOTC has engaged in constant misidrection, missed deadlines, and conflicting messages, and it's hard not to watch it all and not conclude it is a...

Necromancer Games NOT going with current GSL.

That's a biggie. I also think the lack of clarity on "extend" vs. "redefine" makes books like the APH -- or, really, any splat -- risky. Let's suppose I want to a swashbuckling setting, with flintlocks and so on. I think giving rangers a bunch of gun-based exploits is a good idea. To avoid...
