The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

Pretty sure that 99.99% of all RPGs use Math. 4e uses less than many...

Mearls on Controller design and At-Will balance

That sounds like WAY more work than is needed. Prep a card? Sheesh. "You see a Squamous Thing." "I roll 25 on my Arcana check." "OK, the Squamous Thing is vulnerable to acid and can eat your spleen from 20 feet away." "Cool." I can't imagine it being a difficult or complex process. Hell, 4e...

Walking wounded: Anyone else having problems with this power?

If we're talking by the book 4e, this is wrong, unless there's some power in some supplement I don't know about. First, only monsters have "Recharge" powers. Second, for each monster which has used a "rechargeable" power, roll 1d6 at the start of their turn. If the result is =>their recharge...

Walking wounded: Anyone else having problems with this power?

Where is it written there must be only one solo monster per day... or that you'll encounter them at the end? 4e is not built on the 'attrition' model of 3e. While I personally like the attrition model for simulating the idea of a long, hard, slog to the final battle, the lack of it also has...

Walking wounded: Anyone else having problems with this power?

Uhm... sounds to me like it's WAD. It *should* be used on skirmisher types -- using it on a tank would be stupid. As for flying... I can see the flying creature limping, flapping to get up in the air and then crashing to the ground again, reeling from where the rogue tore its tendon. This is a...

Another way to describe a monster

In case anyone's interested, here's a 4e version of the beastie: Bloodseeker

Another way to describe a monster

You know, I thought there was something oddly familiar about that one... I created it. :) I had to check my old writing archives to be sure. Damn cool!

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

I cannot parse this sentence. Years of training. Uber muscles. Odd weighting. I'm just THAT AWESOME. Or how about the fact there are, per the rules, NO restrictions on strength and weapons? I can have a Strength of 3, and still do more damage with a greatsword than I do with a dagger.

Bad experience with a 1st level 4e encounter

Yup. One thing I will happily say I was totally wrong about was the lethality/risk of 4e. Reading the preview material and looking at individual monsters and PC hit points, the game looked like it would be a cakewalk. In actual play, it is extremely well balanced and barring unusual good luck...

    D&D 4E Discussing Movement in 4e

I had this argument with my DM. He said the same thing as yours. He was wrong. So is yours. It's a 3e-ism. There are no 'full round' actions in 4e. (I don't think...)

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

Then NO version of D&D is for you, and 4e least of all. Which is perfectly fine with me. I would recommend GURPS, which is very easily tuned from "completely realistic" to "off the wall", with the GM having full control over where the dial is set. D&D, to me, has ALWAYS been about the Wacky...

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

Actually, I did address it, quite directly. The default milieu (I learned that word from Gary!) for D&D, going all the way back to the Little Brown Books, was an ahistorical mish-mash of countless sources from many periods in history and many different fantasy and science fiction authors. It...

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

Which might make a lot of sense if the movement was some sort of Str based attack, but it's based on Charisma and is the province of dextrous rogues -- and, again, ignores mass completely. You can think of *some* circumstances where it can work. In 4e, it works in ALL circumstances, no...

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

You're a 10 Strength halfling and it's an elder dragon? Sure, I can keep coming up with examples, and you can keep finding ways to "justify" them -- but you can't justify swinging two big swords?

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

Positioning, not poisoning. It's a rogue ability, 1st level, which lets a rogue attack a target and slide them up to Charisma modifier squares. Even if the target is utterly and completely incapable of moving, the rogue moves them. (The immobilized condition does not apply to forced movement.)...

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

Yeah. So, uhm, did you read what I wrote? At all? All wounds healing overnight -- not due to magic. No size modifiers to grab -- not due to magic. Positioning Strike -- not a magical ability. Further, these are all things doable by low-level characters. They don't require "Epic" or even...

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

Yeah, those historical rust monsters, gelatinous cubes, and xorn...not to mention Vance's wizards, Tolkien's elves, Celtic druids, Arthurian knights, and Shao-lin monks all going into battle against Poul Anderson's trolls and Lovecraftian mind flayers. Yeah. Historical accuracy has been the...

Two-blades ranger with two bastards - kosher?

Dudes. It's a big-ass sword, and you're so amazingly badass you whirl two of them around like they were cheerleader's batons. "Historical" has never been a big part of D&D.

Mearls Blog: PHB2 is his best ever

Two things I really liked: a)The Beastmaster ranger in Martial Power. b)The entire "Gladiator" article in Dragon, esp. the weapon specialization powers -- basically, you subvert the multiclass mechanism to gain new powers in the same way you'd use multiclass feats to select powers from an...

Mearls Blog: PHB2 is his best ever

As a general rule, I am deeply suspicious of any creator who claims to love his own work.
