What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

There's been quite a bit of mentioning of why the edition war happens, any of which or all may be correct, there's been a lot of insightful comments. What about the second half though, what's at stake? What worries me about the edition wars is what they've done to the hobby as a whole. Some...

Feat Tax and Why It Harms the System

That would be great, if you could track what you roll and how often you hit, we could have some good data in there.

Feat Tax and Why It Harms the System

I've got a feeling that's the case. All the experiences I've had in higher level play support fights feeling more difficult, with monsters having truly nasty abilities and throwing around buckets of damage, but not actually having a lower success rate for the PC's. The fights don't even take...

Feat Tax and Why It Harms the System

I'm beginning to wonder if something positive can come about from the feat-tax argument if people stop shouting across at one another. The argument basically boils down to two points being repeated: 1. My group has a hard time hitting at high levels/the theorycraft says it's too hard! 2. My...

Have we seen MM3 cover yet?

Yes he was, along with a few others. I, for one, am happy the MMs are getting away from the big baddie being a demon lord. Maybe in MM4 they'll drop in some giant far-realm or starlock themed creature. Arcanamar, level 35 or something like that.

    Elemental Power Source

This would make a very interesting defender. Imagine a defender that uses implements instead of weapons, and primarily does his job by throwing small zones centered on him that slow, daze, mark, immobilize, etc. Almost make him magnetic, in a very literal sense.

    Elemental Power Source

Arcane characters do feel similar in play, but it's hard to really verbalize how they feel. It's complicated, and, well, arcane. I can see elemental characters being very powerful, but unpredictable. Like taking the Chaos sorcerer as a start and running with it.

    Elemental Power Source

Personally, I'm more interested in what the elemental power source would feel like than specifics about energy types. The last thing I want to see is a duplicate Arcane source with different names.

    Elemental Power Source

Remember, 4e elementals are all combinations of two or more elements as well. We don't have a creature of living flame or a little tornado trying to eat you, we now have a flaming cyclone of death that sears you with burning winds. Not many monsters have multiple immunities, so that may be one...

    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

Sure strike is one of those powers that actually is useful, but not to people who just want to maximize their character's damage output. There's a reason why it's recommended for a sword and board fighter. Once you get to paragon, a sword and board fighter with Heavy Blade Opportunity can use...

    How will superior implements work?

Or for that matter, any melee character that doesn't use strength for his primary attack stat. I remember a bunch of people complaining about that when the game first came out, then complaining about stealth eratta and feat taxes when PHB2 came out with the feat that lets you swap out the...

    Tactical Supervision (Warlord 6)

Because it's an interrupt, it would trigger before the attack roll is made. If it was an immediate reaction, it would trigger after the attack. Immediate interrupts can potentially stop the action theyre interrupting. Think of a fighter's mark going off. The monster declares it's thwacking...

    Seeking in-print horror theme RPG

Truth be told, if you're planning on ignoring the canon background info, you can get away with just using the World of Darkness core book. It's about as generic as you can get for a horror game, and it's very well put together.

"Math glitch" -- explanation or pointer?

This is the main reason why I question the validity of the "feat tax" argument. I have experience with upper level 4th edition. The only time I've seen players truly having difficulty hitting an enemy was when an upper-paragon group went off against an elder red dragon. The fight was still a...
