2 Boxes Lords of Madness in the mail today

Love me some dinos in my RPGs. I recently wrapped up a supervillains game in savage worlds, and one of the PCs took a raptor as an animal companion. Which means his nemesis needed an animal companion, so I got myself a shiny new T-Rex to play with.

    Elemental Power Source

The more I think about the elemental power source, the more I want classes broken up by element. Earth=defender Water=leader Fire=striker Air=controller Just break it up like Codex Alera does, and go to town. I never confused their furycrafting with D&D style arcane magic.

Savage Worlds - Our First Game

That diary is an incredible piece of gaming future history. There are so many developments you see in SW that are being mirrored in other games, even 4e has a fair bit of Savage to it. I'm glad you enjoyed the game.

    Edition Love (not War)

    I love D&D... And D&D loves me.

Just how popular was DnD? Did kids really play it during lunch? (red box nostalgia)

I played second edition in the library at my high school during lunch. When third edition came out, some friends of mine used to skip sixth period with me and game. Memories...

    So what happens after 4E?

And my PC significantly reduces my prep time. I've done it both ways, and I looooooove me my compendium.

First Edition feel with 4E rules

I like this statement. I may steal it. Either way, SW is a wonderful lesson in game design from an abstract angle. Their whole idea of the "black box" effect is an interesting one, and nothing will teach you how to reflavor with flair like that little ten dollar book.

    So what happens after 4E?

Good point. I'll give you that.

First Edition feel with 4E rules

This is a lesson I learned in spades with Savage Worlds. I've used that system to run just about everything under the sun, including games that I was told "couldn't" be run with it. If you tilt your head just so when setting up a game, it's amazing what you can do by thinking outside the box.

    So what happens after 4E?

I'll agree with the first bit, and disagree with the last bit. WotC really showed no interest in winning back lapsed 2e players with 4e. Even if some jumped back on the bandwagon, most didn't.

First Edition feel with 4E rules

Right here is the basic problem with trying to capture anything involving an "old school" feel. Put quite simply, old school means something different to everyone who likes it. If you ask ten different "old school" gamers what "old school" means, you'll get ten different lists of criteria. As...

First Edition feel with 4E rules

I reject your premise. Feel isn't necessarily tied to mechanics. Doing a 1e feel is easy, just do an adventure with the grimness/moral ambiguity/wackiness of 1e. Throw in some particularly deadly encounters, as well as traps that have a good chance of killing. Use a bunch of classic...

    New Essentials Builds!

I'm not sure about the fire resistance thing. The zone isn't technically an attack, and the fire resistance thing specifically states that your attacks ignore fire resistance.

    New Essentials Builds!

Which I like. It's not too much more damage, and it's avoidable damage.

    New Essentials Builds!

That was my exact first impression. Suddenly, that huge area is amazing.

On the brand VS the game...

There are, however, topics of conversation that aren't broached respectfully. The listed comments are inflammatory, not because you intend them to be insulting, but because they frequently are found insulting. Just because you aren't insulted by them, doesn't mean nobody else will be. In any...

On the brand VS the game...

Actually, a lot of people claim that. It's one of the finer low points of the edition war.

On the brand VS the game...

It's also a matter of showing restraint and wording things differently to avoid inflaming the situation. Whether you think it is or not, the statement "Edition X isn't D&D" in any of it's variations is an inflammatory statement. You may not get upset about it, but it's a hell of a trigger for...

    Dancey v. Mearls?

Even they don't really do this. Tobacco companies release new varieties of cigarette all the time, and Budweiser has released something like ten new beers in the past two years.

    Magic Items

I'd say with a few exceptions, like artifacts and the new "rare" magic items, as well as story-based items, the PC's should entirely be in charge. As a DM, I'm too busy focusing on making a good story and making interesting characters, as well as controlling an entire world. Every bit of...
