D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Precision strike is amazing. If you actually run the math on it (which the creator of the guide did not), it does nasty brutal things when combined with great weapon master. But again, the issue is that the best options are all about just dealing damage. I'd rather the best options not have...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Yes, I think you are on to something there. I was playing it to test it in a way. I was seeing what it was capable of and how to best optimize its abilities. I guess I could have tried to use a maneuver every round (even though combining them in a Nova round proves more useful) to extend the...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Mainly, I wanted to play D&D with my friends. I typically like martial characters, and I absolutely loathe anything to do with vancian spell slots. That limited my options significantly. My options were barbarian, rogue, or fighter. I decided on fighter because my first 3e and 4e characters...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

When a fight has a lot of little enemies, it is better to save your dice and let the spellcasters AoE them down. The fighter excels at single target damage, but is rather lackluster when it comes to mobs of enemies. No point wasting superiority dice on weaker monsters. As I said, optimal use of...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

I don't think we need "all inclusive fighter" type deal here. Honestly, the 5e fighter is so rigid, that I can't see a way of making it work as a "mythic" fighter. I'd rather there be a whole other class to cover the mythic fighter archetype. We already have the basic fighter for those who want...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Played to level 13 as a Strength based battlemaster. I found the class to be exceptionally repetitive and boring. I had a number of maneuvers, but it was almost always optimal to use menacing attack, riposte, or precision strike. The other maneuvers were typically a waste of a superiority die...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Most of the things you mentioned aren't really mutually exclusive... You can have an interesting martial warrior who has mythical capabilities, features useful outside of combat, and dynamic gameplay/resource management all on the same class.

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

I would honestly be perfectly fine with a martial class that dealt 20% less damage than the fighter if that class had interesting capabilities and tactical decision making on a round by round basis.

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

IMHO the monk is a good starting point for something like a swordsage, but it has a few fundamental issues and would thus need to be rebuilt from the ground up. For starters, the monk has many features that simply don't fit the concept. Purity of Body, Tongue of Sun and Moon, Empty Body...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

It hasn't even always been that way either. There are plenty examples of characters performing extraordinary tasks without needing to resort to supernatural abilities. In 2e, a high level fighter had ~90% chance to make any given saving throw. The high level 5e fighter has around 20% - 50%...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Did someone seriously just suggest using an eldritch knight as a mythical fighter? Does that person have no grasp of the argument here at all? Are they trolling? I can't believe anyone would be thick headed enough to suggest such a thing. For starters, mythical martial heroes do not cast...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

The way to find reasonable people in an argument is to find those who are willing to compromise. I would love if there was an option for a "complex" fighter with mythic capabilities. Call it some other name for all I care, I merely want a non magical martial warrior with no daily abilities that...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Also important to note that there are no examples of myth and literature of "normal" humans who are able to go toe to toe with the likes of giants, 40 ft long dragons, or other huge + sized creatures. Even an ogre tends to be a tough fight for the best "normal" warriors. So we have a huge...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Not true. Anyone with a high Strength and proficiency can be just as good as the fighter at Athletics related tasks. I have played in a game where the Wizard had an 18 Strength, which was higher than my 16 strength fighter, so the wizard was actually better at athletics related tasks. The...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

First off, it is easy to tell what a monsters damage is unless your DM rolls everything entirely behind a screen. And even then, its not hard to figure out after an attack or two. Secondly you are describing is nothing like real life. A boxer may have a sense for how many rounds he can go...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Players do know that though. I have seen them make decisions based off this knowledge before. Like "Oh, the ogre only deals 13 damage on average and I have 45 HP, so I can hold it off for at least 3 rounds." That is entirely disassociated. Being vague doesn't make it any less disassociated...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e Fighter, Do You Enjoy Playiing It?

Nobody says the fighter isn't "fine" when it comes to combat. It is among the top combat classes in the game (if you only measure combat as the ability to deal and receive damage). What the people who complain about the fighter are complaining about has nothing to do with combat. They are...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

Actually, an adult red dragon is one of the few things a 5e fighter could potentially solo. Not a strength based fighter, but a crossbow expert sharpshooter could cause some serious hurt with 2 rounds of action surge, great range, and battlemaster maneuvers.

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

It depends on how much prejudice you have. HP are actually one of the most disassociated mechanics ever invented. You PC should not have a clue what they are, but the player does, and often makes decisions based on the amount of HP left. Then in 5e, you have things like HD, second wind...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

I prefer the solution of -5 to hit +1[W] damage. This prevents GWM or SS abuse from crossbow expert and polearm master while still providing a benefit (though lessened) to other weapons.
