D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

I like how you failed to address the fact that the vengeance paladin's Chanel divinity and the barbarians reckless attacker are not daily resources so allow the paladin and fighter to continue to deal damage better than the fighters no matter how many encounters or rests are taken. The fighter...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

That isn't true though. For example, the vengeance paladin has channel divinity that can contribute more Damage over the course of an encounter than action surge, and it happens to recharge on a short rest. The barbarian can use reckless attacker even while not raging. On top of that, most...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

The problem is, the fighter isn't better at combat than others. The paladin and barbarian both deal better damage per round from levels 1-16 while also having more survivability, better saving throws, more utility, and meaningful non-combat capabilities.

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

So the fighter is great at what it does, and that is fighting. It deals great damage and has a lot of resilience. But, that is all it has. The class is the worst class in the game when it comes to the exploration or interaction pillars. That is fine for those who don't really care about those...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

Fair enough. I honestly feel 4e would have been much better if it only went up to 20 levels and the math was half as fast (+1 total bonuses every 2 levels instead of +1 every level). That would have been a nice middle ground with the IMHO stagnant progression of 5e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

what is amusing about your example is that what you say you like is how it works in 4e, but not in 5e. In 4e, your accuracy and damage both increase significantly as you level. In 5e they don't. So at level 1 you may hit an Ogre infrequently for a small portion of its HP, but by level 10 you...

    [Homebrew] 5e Warblade

If you use the damage comparison spreadsheet I linked above, it is fairly easy to see how the different fighting styles compare to one another. I merely copied the sheets, replaced 8.3333333 with 7, increased accuracy by .05, and gave an additional +1 in the damage calculation. You can verify my...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

But those are all things other players already have access to, and generally are more competent at than a fighter. After all, if the 10 STR wizard still has a chance to succeed at pretty much any STR related challenge you might face, what is the fighter actually bringing to the table that is...

    [Homebrew] 5e Warblade

Interesting that you say this. The Great Weapon Style actually deals more DPR than Weapon Specialization from levels 1-20 and only deals ~.75 DPR less than weapon specialization from levels 1-10. Considering weapon specialization is limited to a specific type of weapon while Great Weapon Style...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

Cool, so you agree that the fighter doesn't bring anything cool or meaningful to non-combat situations.

Thanks, glad you like the concept. Feel free to comment more (either here or on the document). I am always looking for feedback on how to make the class more refined and balanced.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I was talking about how I would handle the attack in 4e. In 5e it is significantly more difficult. This is because in 4e, you can easily create an improvised action that is worse than an at-will attack but better than a basic attack. This gives players a means of improvising without reducing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

This is so true, the difference really just lay with the scale of things. In 5e, your numbers grow by about +5 to +10 over the course of 20 levels. In 4e, your numbers grow by about +20 in that same period. 4e actually works much better IMHO if you remove the 1/2 level bonus from both players...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

To each his own. I love shaken as a way to model any kind of distraction in combat from "sand in the eyes", to feints and bluffs, to combat intimidation. Some people like things to be more specific, I get that. As for called shots in D&D, I completely agree. They don't make sense with HP, and I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I really love how Imaro's argument went from 5e has better improvisation rules than 4e, to 5e has just as good improvisation rules, to you shouldn't be able to improvise awesome stunts and any game that allows for such stunts is bad. Listen, I'm not trying to force a playstyle on anyone. In...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

The problem is using your action to knock the giant over is almost never a worthwhile use of an action when the warrior could instead attack the giant. Also the player wanted to attack and knock the giant over at the same time. you were the one who said you wouldn't allow it for the whirlwind...

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Not to mention the number of ways that players can mitigate or negate the chance of random encounters. Anything from Rope Trick to flight, to teleportation.

    D&D 5E (2014) Current take on GWM/SS

Aramis, I'm fairly certain your analysis is wrong for a number of reasons. Check out this spreadsheet here to see why: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cZGd7HwD1dWSzYqVx4PQqw9dl9YYzKxRv7YJtOojkDE/edit?usp=sharing Basically, even without smart play, teamwork, or additional accuracy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

Is the STR contest require an action? Is the player still allowed to attack. Is the STR contest in addition to the Warriors normal attacks? Can the contest work against huge sized giants which you cannot normally shine? Why STR and not DEX? In a straight STR contest vs a giant, the player is at...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

Except that what you posted really doesn't give a DM all that much useful information. When a player wants to hit a giant in the knee to cause it to stumble and fall prone what do you do? When a player wants to improvise a sweeping attack to hit multiple enemies, what kind of check is used...
