D&D 4E FR 4E SPOILER - Grand Histoy of the Realms info

Sounds awesome to me. What the realms needed more than anything was some sort of reboot that wiped away decades of overblown detail. Now if Elminster and 99.9% of the drow died in the catastrophe, I'll be a happy camper. :D And it sounds like, by killing "thousands of wizards", they are...

    Playtesting?

Well, it's the end of the week and still nothing. I've got my fingers crossed that it'll be today, but I haven't got my hopes up.

    Playtesting?

I know the feeling. I still love Midnight to death, but I've got so much other stuff going on I can't focus on it like I'd want. But yeah, playtesting would be awesome.

D&D 4E Material components and spell books? Get rid of them for 4e!

The spellbook is ok. No biggy. I can take it or leave it. Material componants on the other hand need to be changed. If they exist at all, they shouldn't be necessary. Take Fireball for instance. You should be able to cast it without bat poo, but if the player went through the effort to get some...

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

Ruin Explorer is right. JDJblatherings, You make it sound like the difference between a dagger and a short sword is like comparing a club to a three section staff. You can argue that they can be used differently in combat, and one is better than the other at certain things, but a -4...

    ENWorld Community PoL setting?

With the PoL theme for 4e, I'm wondering if there is any interest in a communal project where we build a PoL style setting from the ground up here on the forums?

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

Regardless of how it's done, something needs to change. As is, you can have a fighter who has weapon focus and weapon specialization with a hatchet, but if he picks up a kama he takes a -4. That's ridiculous. I know kamas and hatchets are different, but they aren't that different. I like...

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

In summery: Players like bonuses. They don't like penalties. I think the game should award those with proficiency instead of punishing those without it. The baseline should be unproficient instead of proficient.

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

Word has it that a 1st level 4e character will be roughly equivalent in power to a 4th level 3e character. If that's the case, 1st level Fighters may have a BAB of +4. That makes for a lot more possibilities at 1st level.

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

What you are describing is someone without training vs. someone with training. This could be: Wizard 1 vs. Fighter 1 Wizard 1 vs. Wizard 3 Unproficient Wizard vs. Proficient Wizard Regardless, the same end result could be reached by granting a bonus to the proficient user instead of a penalty...

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

If he has to be 1st level, yeah, rogue is the best way to go.

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

Why not? It makes since that a street thug with some muscle on him might favor a big axe over a little dagger. You shouldn't have to blow a whole feat or take a level in fighter to make that happen.

Is weapon and armor "proficiency" system REALLY necessary?

I kind of agree. I'm not sure the idea of proficiency should be totally done away with, but the requirement of a feat or suffer a -4 is a bit ridiculous. And it isn't a game balance thing. So what if the wizard has full plate and a great sword. His spells are probably going to fail and he...

    Playtesting?

The developers have said numerous times that there will be an application to fill out.

    Playtesting?

If they do that, we need to go back to "D&D" and "AD&D". I'm all for a simpler game existing for younger players, but I like my games with more detail than most 10 year olds can digest.
