    D&D General The Jester's Perfect D&D

XP for Goals Each pc can choose to assign themselves up to three minor goals and one major goal at a time. A major goal should be one that can't be accomplished easily or quickly- it should take considerable effort and many sessions to accomplish. Achieving a minor goal should take some...

D&D General Which video game monster have you used in your game?

    Goldmen (goldfolk) spring to mind.

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: The Planes

I do, especially when the pcs reach mid to high levels.

D&D General Players: Do You Care From Whence Your DM Gets His Monsters/Challenges?

I prefer it if my dms use at least some monsters from non-standard sources. I know too much about the monsters in the MM and other official monster books; I love surprises and not knowing what might happen or what tricks a creature might pull. One of my dms even loves using Chat GPT to make...

What fantasy creatures migrate with the seasons?

They aren't in 5e, but in my campaign, digesters (which I have converted) migrate in massive herds every seven years, making the plains temporary extreme danger zones.

    D&D 5E (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

3e solved this problem 20 years ago with "often", "usually", and "always" descriptors for alignments.

    D&D 5E (2024) Have You Pre-Ordered The 2024 MM?

No, but my FLGS has me on their list of people to pull it for. I usually get the special cover version.

    D&D 5E (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

Doesn't it also mean that, for instance, a gnoll cultist isn't a humanoid at all but rather a fiend? I don't get the reasoning.

    D&D 5E (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

I feel like removing all these creatures from the Humanoid type leaves the Humanoid type as basically meaningless. It's basically "most pcs are Humanoids" now. That's... not much.

D&D 5E (2014) Not upgrading? What version of D&D 5e are you sticking with?

I"m not a fan of a lot of the changes since, and including, Tasha's: floating ASIs, the massive amount of power creep, etc. I am likely to stick to the 2014 rules, when I am not running my own homebrew system. But I'm also likely to try out the 2024 stuff and see how it sits with me. I don't...

    D&D General The Jester's Perfect D&D

So I am liking my "per session" thing for combat, but am going to change it to being for danger. So it will include traps, hazards, etc. Something like- If up to 1/4 of the session is spent dealing with danger, the pcs earn a base 50 xp. If up to 1/2 the session is spent dealing with danger...

D&D 5E (2024) Its till just me or is the 2024 MM heavily infused by more 4e influences?

That may have been true in your game, but in published adventures, as well as every campaign I ran or played in, monsters with class levels were very common. One of the joys of 3e was in creating a half-fey gelatinous rust monster 4th level barbarian/2nd level rogue/5th level ninja of the...

    D&D General The Jester's Perfect D&D

I'm actually starting to think that, rather than giving xp per combat, I might want to give xp for combat in a session. Basically, figure out some numbers for little combat in a session (less than 1/3), a moderate amount of combat in a session, and most of the session is combat (more than 2/3)...

What are you reading in 2025?

I enjoyed it, but I also really liked Upgrade. I find Blake Crouch to be a fun read every time. But I do prefer a longer, meatier book in general; I like a little more complexity and convolution than Crouch's typical length allows for.
