    “Monstrous” NPCs

If you're not supposed to talk to monsters, why do they have languages? If you can talk to it, it can tell you what it wants. If it can tell you what it wants, you can try to help it gain that- in other words, it can give you a "quest". (Or a rumor.) If I ever had a player rage quit over...

    D&D General The Jester's Perfect D&D

So what is my roleplaying xp system? I am going to return to a system I used in 3e: the "four point" roleplaying system. At the end of each session, each pc can earn xp for each of four categories: class, race, alignment, and personal. It's easy to earn these xps; you just have to tell me how...

    D&D General The Jester's Perfect D&D

I have been re-thinking xp some more. First of all, if I give flat xp based on encounter difficulty, one of the main reasons for escalating numbers of xp required to advance- higher xp values for higher level foes- goes away. So does the number of xp required per level really need to climb...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

28 with fire. And multiply that by three, since it's attacking three times.

When to set a "historical" supers game? (read OP before answering poll)

With that caveat, I'd say during the Ancient Age- basically, I'd set a supers game in ancient Sumeria, during the time of Gilgamesh.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

There were monster design guidelines though. They weren't robust; they were sort of hidden, even. But they were in the rules for figuring out the xp value of a monster. Sure, they didn't tell you how many Hit Dice to give a monster; but they told you what those HD were worth in xp, and...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

Do you have any evidence for the "vibes" assertion, at least as far as it trumping math goes? Because I don't think that's accurate at all. I'd posit that the math is simple enough to be put into a chart similar to the one in the 2014 DMG. I could be wrong, but I see no reason that a similar...

Then spell those things out. It's not hard. And DMs aren't stupid- and we could absolutely use those rules or guidelines.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

Hard disagree. Not everyone uses, or wants to use, DnD Beyond. I, for one, never want to be obligated to use digital tools for my game. That was one of the biggest flaws with 4e.

Anyone want 44 pages of spells converted to 5e?

May you get a ton of use out of it!

Anyone want 44 pages of spells converted to 5e?

Wow, it's a much older version than the one I use now. I'll attach the updated one here. EDIT: This version is more like 177 pages.

AD&D 1E Holy Symbol Spell Purpose?

1e didn't have rituals. The process for making holy water in 1e was detailed in the DMG. It was expensive, required a holy font made of precious materials, and took significant time.

What are you reading in 2025?

I already tore through Bone Silence by Alistair Reynolds, now on to Dark Matter by Blake Crouch.

    D&D General Best dungeons?

My favorite is a homebrew, Bile Mountain, which I have run in multiple incarnations in both 3e and 4e- Bile Mountain Return to Bile Mountain Beyond Bile Mountain Revenge on Bile Mountain The Bile Mountain Casino and Resort It lacks one thing that most great dungeons have, which is a bunch of...

    D&D General The Jester's Perfect D&D

That's sort of the model I want to use, but something a bit easier to evaluate on the fly.

    D&D General The Jester's Perfect D&D

The xp system is something I'm still banging my head against. I want to use the basic setup from 3e as far as how many xp it takes to advance- a certain number times the level you're advancing from to gain a level. (3e used 1,000 as that "certain number," but I kind of like the idea of a...
