Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season 3 Viewing (Spoilers)

You get to feel however you want. Do we get to mention things that might mitigate how you feel, may have been overlooked, or engage in discussions of why folks may feel one way or another, or are your feelings posted on a discussion board but not open for discussion?

Really? That's your gripe - that they had appeared in one prior episode?

Friday Chat: What Mechanics Do You Steal From A Game To Use In Another?

Let me see if I can articulate it. Leaving out the specifics of Draw Steel's dice mechanics, since I'd be porting it to some other system anyway... For any negotiation, an NPC has two stats, Interest and Patience, rated 0 to 5, representing how much they want to help, and and how much they...

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season 3 Viewing (Spoilers)

Yeah, remember, Season 3 was impacted by the Writer's and SAG-AFTRA strikes that didn't end until November 2023. Filming on Season 3 started in December 2023, and ended in May 2024. The order for Season 4 didn't come until April 2024. So, by the time they knew they were doing a Season 4, the...

Friday Chat: What Mechanics Do You Steal From A Game To Use In Another?

I carry "popcorn initiative" around into a lot of games - especially ones in which folks don't usually spend a lot of resources specifically on improving their ability to get good initiative. One I have not actually done, yet: I recently played a one-shot of Draw Steel, and it has a framework...

D&D General Why wouldn't you run a Dark Sun game?

Pretty much the same here. Just not my favorite theme. Even more importantly, my players wouldn't care for it. Especially right now - my players aren't interested in unyielding dystopias. If there's problems in the fictional world, they wanna be able to do something about them.

    So, life on Mars...

Well, insofar as it can happen the other direction, too we can expect that rocks from Earth have ended up on Mars, too.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Hey, what's with all the absolutes? Don't drive this to poles without nuance. Please. Note something - you yourself were asserting that there's a pretty high turnover rate in players, that a player's career in the game might be as short as a year. How much expertise in what constitutes good...

I didn't question your ability to express yourself. I am presenting a counter-argument - we should not cordon off an entire style of games ("D&D and similar games") as sacrosanct from having such rules. That you want to have a game you like without such rules would not be an issue. Suggesting...

What do you want to know when joining ENWorld?

That is not quite correct . A (+) thread is for responses that don't question or deny the base premise of the thread, or otherwise try to shut down the thread's discussion. There was a time, years ago, when someone starting a discussion, "I think X is cool, I want to talk about X and how you...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

There are a number of entertainments that folks (in the US, at least) take up in their adolescent/teen years, carry on for a couple/few years, and then drop. Reading comic books is (or at least was) one. Playing collectible card games, doing armature theater, and weekly beer pong are others...

"They" are "game designers and writers". If they want to include hard rules to govern GM or player behavior in their games, they get to do that.

Well, "new" is "new to humans/the Federation". Not literally new, like born yesterday, or something.

Eh, the trope is that if you run into your clone, you're eventually going to try to kill the other you, so no thanks.

As previously noted, I can see the point for D&D, but only because that game holds an absolutely unique position in the market that makes some forms of experimentation or innovation difficult to do well. But, that doesn't hold for any other game, and similarity to D&D should not be considered...

In D&D, perhaps. In general, there's nothing wrong with a designer building certain behaviors for GMs, players, or both, in rules. It would allow curating a game to provide a specific experience. If you don't like that experience, you just don't buy that game.

Did you mean, "I never said there was."? Because otherwise, this is not a sensible response. Edit: You know what? Never mind. This will take longer to weed through than it is worth.

That's one case. I am responding to it as a general statement, because I don't see how this generalizes. There is nothing that prevents a new species definition from containing new rules.
