Why would you have assumed they were retconning where their name came from…? They’re not re-writing realms history, they’re advancing the timeline.

I think Amethyst was chosen just to match the name of the order. Again, there is no incongruity with the existing lore. They’re still an order of Cormyrean knights who slew an oddly purple-looking black dragon. At some point since then, they also became allies with a group of Amethist dragons...

Well, bad news, it looks like the purple dragon knights are going to be riding amethyst dragons anyway. The subclass we’re getting in the book is just not going to be ties specifically to the purple dragon knights.

What I’m against is the idea that because it has changed (and again, it seems like it has changed, the purple dragon knights are Amethyst dragon riders now, we just aren’t getting a subclass about it), it is inherently disrespectful of canon. I have no real attachment to the Purple Dragon...

No, the UA introduced the idea that, by [current year in FR calendar], the purple dragon knights allied with amethyst dragons and now ride them. Nothing said the previous lore for them was being replaced, it was a new thing that happened, more recently than them slaying said black dragon.

I mean, if Downton Abbey was called “the bikini babe spaceship and motorcycle variety hour,” I think people would be pretty justified in expecting it to feature those things. Well dragons, and people who ride them, are things that exist in Forgotten Realms. Starships and cyborg ninja zombies...

Because D&D dragons all famously share the same temperament and moral alignment. No one who would fight one kind of dragon could ever possibly hope to ally with some other kind of Dragon in D&D, no sir!

I mean, I agree in principle. But I don’t think chivalrous knight was really an archetype in need of filling. The Banneret doesn’t feel like a subclass that was made to fill an archetypal role within the fighter class. It feels like a subclass that was made because they were doing a Forgotten...

I don’t find the existing lore boring, I just don’t know the existing lore. And don’t really care to, because Forgotten Realms is too massive and bloated to be accessible even if I was interested in it as a setting. Mostly, the name “purple dragon knight” conjures the mental image of a knight...
