Can you make use of a systemless NPC book filled with colorful characters?

The big question is: how "systemless"? "Still within a given genre but not dependent on any one system that uses that genre" or "not aimed towards any game system at all, regardless of genre"? The latter would be more difficult/complex as some character types/classes do not readily cross...

Can you make use of a systemless NPC book filled with colorful characters?

Depending on the game mechanics, there could be other interactions that would require stats/skills and you never know what stunts the players are going to pull on you. What starts out as a basic "go to the store and buy something from the storekeeper" that does not require stats and skill...

Can you make use of a systemless NPC book filled with colorful characters?

Even if the stats were presented in terms of "Average" and varying degrees of "better than" or "worse than" average it would be of help - providing the GM knows their own system and what the "normal", "low" and "high" levels are for their stats, it should not be any difficulty to convert...

"Can my spouse play for an evening?"

A player in a game I was involved in asked our DM if his girlfriend could sit in on a game. The DM agreed, the girlfriend sat in on the game, really enjoyed it, joined the game properly and became an enthusiastic and well-liked player. Her boyfriend, however, was actually quite a prat and his...

Some idle gossip for a shallow nobleman to drop

Of course, you can't forget the classics: "Sink me! Call that a cravat? It's positively limp." (The ability to affect a foppish British accent while gesticulating pompously with a lorgnette is, of course, a prerequisite for effective, withering, delivery)

Some idle gossip for a shallow nobleman to drop

And you wonder why you and I never get invited to Society Parties any more... Mind you, I did warn you that it was a trifle OTT to tell the princess she had totally ripped-off that dowager duchess's dress design...

If you can't find any cod pieces, will fish fingers do?

Too bad I can't give out XP for XP - I now want to create for my universe a suitably heroic but fictional famous person called "Dorf" that poser-gangers would want to emulate...

Some idle gossip for a shallow nobleman to drop

Straying further into messing with people: If fashion is paramount and the character's proudly showing off his/her new garment (doublet, dress, tunic, jacket, whatever) a suitably waspish character could say admiringly, "my, that is exquisite fabric" *beat* "you should have it made into a...

How soon do you see warning signs of a TPK?

I'd go as far as to say that under certain circumstances, the rest of the party failing to do something* about a player who does something suicidally stupid can be a precursor to a TPK. * like killing the moron on the spot to signify to any and all witnesses that they do not support his/her...

A classic scene, Doug. Sadly, I haven't "spread the luurve" enough to give you any more XP as yet.

Some idle gossip for a shallow nobleman to drop

You could use it to work in an old joke: "I say, did you hear about Lord Fotheringham-Smythe? Seems he was caught in flagrante delicto with a camel." Then, if the players ask if it was a boy camel or a girl camel, you say: "Girl camel, of course, nothing queer about Fotheringham-Smythe."

That might be the safest option. But then, we're battle-seasoned veterans who have faced Black Dragons, vampires, zombie hordes, eldritch creatures from the Dawn of Time, Old Ones and 'dorphed-up boostergangs - what the hell do we care about "safe options"?

    Rat Bastard DM Requirements

That's my take as well. I spend a lot of time on characterisation and developing the location. Whoever, whatever the PCs react with, there are going to be consequences. The potential for both positive and negative reaction is there. And the reactions will not always be predictable, but they...

    Rat Bastard DM Requirements

"Nice" and "mean" are very subjective. I was playing in a Cyberpunk campaign - characters were generated by the GM and assigned to us: loyal corporate employees, raised by the corporation. Sent out of our comfort zone, someone started throwing rocks at us from the top of a building, we saw...

You don't, do you? *tsk tsk* Next you'll be expecting them to actually play in character. ;) I'm the mean sod who decrees that anything said by a player is taken to be said by his/her character - which means the NPCs are likely to react to any smart-arsed comments they make. Likewise...
