[Ari Marmell's blog] To House Rule or Not to House Rule

The way I think about it is that blog comments are comments made to the blogger, or to commenters on the blog. A thread about the blog in a forum is a comment made to everyone. Not that I can speak for the OP. Though, threads being listed as trackbacks might be a good idea.

What's the most critical piece of dungeoneering equipment?

The other parts of the SAM aren't necessary, though. Chuck Norris would roundhouse them into oblivion anyways.

Keeping track of combat length (for posterity)

I found out last night that I might end up having one or two new players, so we'll see if the minutes-per-turn stat stay in the same range (though, they're similarly new players, so there'll be a learning curve).

What's the most critical piece of dungeoneering equipment?

Chuck Norris. Chuck Norris is the answer to every thread ever made.

Congrats to "Obryn Troll (Lvl 10)"

Couldn't a troll eat its own arm, continually regenerating it back? I think starving it might be tough.

Keeping track of combat length (for posterity)

I'm pretty satisfied, so far. But, I don't know what you mean by 'a lot'. I don't think I agree with your assessment. Blargney's combats have been, on average somewhere around 4 rounds and under an hour. About 15 minutes per round, and about 3 minutes per turn (though, you have to figure less...

From the ashes will rise a new Hivemind.

Interesting idea, but do you think it probably limits scenic moments? I don't generally have a spare experienced player--my most experienced player had started playing 4e something like a month or less prior to that session, though he has substantial AD&D experience. So, I suppose I could have...

    Stained Glass d20's

Wow, that is cool! I'd try rolling them, too, on a pillow.

From the ashes will rise a new Hivemind.

I didn't want to hijack the other thread, but I wanted to mention. Sure, St. Joan of Arc was a BA. If we're going to talk saints, there are a number of pretty awesome stories, though (and, possibly, bordering on breaking forum rules). This is my girlfriend's favorite saint, by far, and she's a...

A Leap over Boiling Lava onto a Flying Wyvern

Have I mentioned recently that I love playing with new players? I love the creativity they bring to the game, and that they think of things that we more experienced players wouldn't even consider due to our preconceptions of D&D. They're drawn by the classic heroism, rather than the rules. I...

A Leap over Boiling Lava onto a Flying Wyvern

I was GMing for some friends--some of their first roleplaying games ever. One of them, I even had to explain the concept of roleplaying. I was running the adventure at the back of the DMG, as an intro game, and in the first room, the party is separated from the kobolds by a pit of sludge in the...

    The logic of OAs

One per combatant's turn. So, I think: If, on your ally's turn, an enemy does something that provokes (if something gets triggered), you can take another OA. 5 opponents, 5 PCs (counting you) = max 10 OAs per round.

What rule does your group ignore?

I was looking for this rule the other day and I couldn't find it.

From the ashes will rise a new Hivemind.

I have a player who fancies himself a rules lawyer. Except, he's so terrible at it. Whenever he questions a ruling of mine, he gets it wrong. Sometimes, though, I'm not 100% sure, so I let him have his way, then look it up later... and he's always wrong. Blah.

    Distracted Players

A guy in my home group is at least a little ADHD--he just can't concentrated on the game for long periods of time. So, when it's not his turn, he'll play on his iPad or something. I'm totally okay with that, and he gets (some or most) of his turn ready before his turn actually comes up to help...

That sounds like an Aura of Hurt!

    Silly question

He gets to slide in the ith direction? Do I have to remember how imaginary numbers work from Calculus?

Congrats to "Obryn Troll (Lvl 10)"

It's probably better than a Gnoll. At least he gets regeneration.
