AC vs. reflex and what is what

I don't see these as incompatible. Just as in 3e everything (pretty much) everything that increases your touch AC increases your regular AC (but not vice versa), it seems likely that in 4e everything that increases your reflex will also increase your AC (but not vice versa).

    D&D 4E "Adult" Content in 4e Art

I don't have any problems with nudity or gore in RPGs, but I want it to be gritty and mature, not sensationalist. I go to RPG books for immersion, not titillation. I'm very annoyed with illustrators or editors who are fine with crassly sexualized presentations of fantasy characters but suddenly...

Woot -- quality new race flavor!

All of the flavor for the new races seems really cool! I'm surprised that I like the dragonborn, but a naturally draconic race of wandering mercenaries seems very appropriate--basically, they seem like a core race that combines some of the most appealing features of 3e kobolds (the genealogy)...

Why the three-tiered licenses could be really great.

I'm enthusiastic about the three-tiered licensing system. Why? Because, with luck, it will kill the smaller-scale .pdf-based supplement industry, including, for example, EN Publishing. Why is this good? Because I think the smaller-scale system is bad for the game--I see no reason to think that...

    Sneak attack and scorching ray?

Thanks, that's helpful (though it's sad news to relay to a friend putting together an arcane trickster build).

    Sneak attack and scorching ray?

Scorching ray allows multiple attack rolls. If a character has a sneak attack ability and casts the spell on a character denied her Dexterity bonus, does a character get to apply her sneak attack damage to every ray? Is this a subject of controversy?

Too old for the first time?

I just want to emphasize here that I don't mean to assume anything like authoritative knowledge of 4e--I'm basing my response on informally formed impressions. They seem common enough to be worth airing, and it's interesting for me to think through them publicly, but my hopes of being pleasantly...

Too old for the first time?

I don't really think there's anything objectively wrong with 4e--it's just that a lot of the apparent flavor and tone doesn't do much for me, the same way that most of the flavor from the last couple of years of 3.5e products doesn't do much for me. I like a D&D that evokes gritty, uncivilized...

Did any DM actually RUN the FR that way?

You know, my favorite moment in the now-classic (goodness, how time flies!) Baldur's Gate was the part where you got to kill Drizzt and take his stuff. You were not only allowed, but encouraged (given the magnitude of the reward--he had the best gear in the game) to take him down and thereby...

    [E6 Class] Dervish

Good idea. More specifically, were you thinking of something like the following? (This is how I would elaborate the idea.) --) You can initiate a dance once per encounter. --) A dance lasts for a number of rounds to half your dervish level (rounded down) plus one round for every four ranks you...

D&D 4E Simple Poll - How do you feel about 4E Right Now?

Thumbs down, which surprised me--it wasn't the response I expected to give before I was forced to.

Can we make "charge die" core, please?

Pretty sure that was me, actually! Though the original post might've died with a server at some point or another, and I could be misremembering. It's really cool to hear someone used rules I came up with. Perhaps a better progression--and I suspect a statistically equivalent one--is the...

    Sectumsempra's Severing Slash

Cool! So the idea is to have a not-bad direct damage spell (weaker than polar ray, but not subject to energy resistance) with a debilitating extra effect on a saving throw. So the "grevious cutting wound" bit is critical to balancing the spell--if we neglected it, the spell would totally be...

    The death of bonus stacking?

I like this general approach, and think reducing the number of bonus types is the answer to lots of things. For example, it simultaneously streamlines play and potentially reduces a character's reliance on magical items. (A character might get the same AC bonus from a ring of protection and an...

    The death of bonus stacking?

I think the ideal solution is to go with two types of bonuses! Everything is either an enhancement bonus (which doesn't stack with other enhancement bonuses) or an [b]unnamed[/b[ bonus (which stacks with everything else, including other unnamed bonuses). On this view, unnamed bonuses come from...

Powering up the fighter: The Action Fighter

SIMPLE SOLUTION: DON'T PLAY EPIC. I mean, seriously, this basically is just one of many reasons that epic rules are a hopeless mess, and campaigns that use them do so at their peril.

    mindless eating at games

Hah. I found that I lost tons of weight pretty much as soon as I left college. I don't eat as much pizza, but I basically started living on burritos.

The D&D Great Wheel of the Planes and Moral Ethical Relativism

This is mostly a response to the OP. I don't think this is a consequence of the cosmology, and I also don't think it's what the designers intended. It's easy to think that because "good" and "evil" are linked to different planar regions, and because they're deeply intertwined with powerful...

    New name for Warlord

"Captain" is perfect--it really evokes a daring hero who leads through skill and resolve. This is one of those cases where a Tolkien quote works: "Here let it be said that in those days the Heir of Isildur arose in the North, and he took the shards of the sword of Elendil, and in Imladris they...
