L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

I generally agree, however I also see the strength in having all the various stats, abilities and special stuff contribute to the level assessment of a given monster. I want the system to be able to handle regular humans in the best equipment money can buy (custom full plate for example) and...

Please step away from the 4th edition "effect everything" abilities.

Sorry, I meant "as the defining feature of the class." The pre-4e barbarian's rage certainly is a damage rider, but it's also full of other mechanics. I'd say a pre-4E defining characteristic of a rogue is their skills rather than sneak attack/back stab. Absolutely.

    D&D 5E (2014) Where is D&D Headed Next (Wired.com)

Ah, so you want people to believe D&Dnext is coming because 4E is just so damn successful and selling like hotcakes. Wired is probably pretty confident in their ability to back up their assertion about D&D being in peril. All they have to do is mention the slashing of 4E releases back to a...

Please step away from the 4th edition "effect everything" abilities.

The only thing I don't want to see when it comes to the ranger (or any class) is a defacto role defining ability. Like a striker damage rider. Or a defender marking mechanic. Or a twice per encounter healing ability.

L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

Yes! :] This is a great approach for both having a monster built based on its fictional characteristics and neatly codified into a level for encounter building. It could probably be a weighted assessment. I think how dangerous a monster is to the PCs matters quite a lot as well. I think...

    D&D 5E (2014) I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

Yep. Even though I'm generally in favor of PC races that are less human than demi-humans being not PCs, I definitely see that other people really like them, so they should probably be there.

You ever seen a Wizard Dominat @ low LvL?

I haven't read the whole thread, so sorry if my comment is missing something you already covered. If you're doing a hexcrawl with the above goal, wouldn't you note the existence of the abandoned monastary for a possible adventuring locale to visit after the werewolf issue is dealt with? I've...

[House Rule] Weapon & Implement Speed

Again, what about the vast amount of times depicted in medieval fighting manuals where you change the way you wield your weapon according to the situation? What about when you take your two handed sword, grab it half way up and draw the tip of the blade forward in a rapid motion? Or when when...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where is D&D Headed Next (Wired.com)

What about: If you’ve been following role-playing game news, you know that, for whatever the reason, 4E isn't satisfying WotC's need as a product line and its release schedule has been trimmed back while a public play testing of its replacement has been announced. Is that better?

L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

It's more than that. if you take a look at the monster math, a 1st level monster has 15 AC. Based on what? The armour it's wearing? The dexterity bonus it has? A half level bonus to defenses? What if I have one soldier with a dex of 10 in chain and another in plate & shield? They both have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Guidelines for D&D Next playtest/adventure discussion here at ENW

If I am looking to make sure I'm running the game as written or have a question about how to use the rules to resolve things, how do I ask about that? And how does anyone give me a meaningful answer without doing the above?

L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

I definitely agree with this. 3.x frustrated me to the point of quitting D&D for about 8 years (fortunately, that freed up time for games like My Life With Master, DitV, Nine Worlds, Fudge/FATE, etc.,). My point in bringing this issue up is that while it may be somewhat talked about in the...

[House Rule] Weapon & Implement Speed

So what happens when a long sword wielder wants to fight according to some historical techniques and makes a half blade grip attack? Does the weapon speed change to that of a short spear? Or what happens if the wielder makes a murder strike and uses their cross piece as a warhammer while...

    D&D 5E (2014) I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

A cool thing to include would be a section about how to reflavour all the races into variations on humans. I think I wouldn't mind running a game where all the PCs have to be humans without losing the mechanical variety of having multiple species. Then I'd probably make every single non-human...

Are all Kenku part of a monolithic wu-jen/ninja culture? Is it a Kenku who happens to be wu-jen/Ninja multiclass, or are all Kenku everywhere like that? Kenku wu-jen/ninja character sounds pretty cool. Kenku wu-jen/ninja caricature culture sounds terrible.

Doesn't the proposed rarity system where people are told up front that not every race is part of every setting solve this whole issue?

    D&D 5E (2014) I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

How about instead we don't make caricatures of the history of foreign cultures as aliens or reptilians? And even in feudal Japan, the Bushido code applied only to those who actually were part of the warrior nobility. Their entire society wasn't following the code of the warrior. If you...

L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

I'm not really satisfied with this approach as long as the stats of a monster are a function of it's level and role/type rather than it's fictional description. At a given level, everything about a monster can be only one of a handful of different stat blocks, then differentiated only by its...

    D&D 5E (2014) I don't like Dragonborn: Please stay away from D&D Next.

Sometimes people just want to feel like they've had an outlet to express something. For instance, my last worry for 5e is that it will use the 4e style level-as-pacing framework where monster stats are all a product of a level based formula relative to PC level rather than statted up based on...
