    What should I buy?

Assume I like everything. I prefer to DM, so anything that helps with that would be best. Sorry for being unclear. I'm just trying to get a feel for what's out there.

    What should I buy?

Historically, I haven't bought a lot of WotC books, since I've preferred to focus on open content that I could potentially reuse. I'm also on a tight budget, so I rarely get to buy a book anyway. But today, I'm buying a book. I think I'd like to get an official WotC book of some kind...

Help me build a Vampiric City!

The trains run on time? Edit: I could see apathy and traditional connections with the city preventing a lot of people from leaving. All their ties are in the city, and the vampires keep their worst activities secret.

Is gaming *with* a map and minis really bad?

I don't like minis. It's not because I think they limit everyone's imagination, but because they limit mine. Some use minis to bring them closer to the action in the game world (and some people don't want to be brought closer to the game world at all). As for me, minis distance me from the...

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

I think this is a good question. I don't know the answer, of course. A similar question, but one that might get different answers is: For those who think game fiction is bad, What makes it that way?

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

I don't know if that's true all the time. It can certainly work the other way-the in game action can play out like an action sequence in a novel. I've played in my friend's games via Fantasy Grounds, and he tends to describe combat very much like it might play out in a novel or a movie. I...

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

Sorry about that. I should have been more direct with my thread title.

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

In my opinion, some of the Ravenloft and Forgotten Realms books were well written, even if the Ravenloft ones were often derivative. I also enjoyed the Prism Pentad for Dark Sun until the last book. I think that as long as you don't expect high art, but instead a good yarn, some of them can be...

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

I'd say with relative certainty that my friend has read most of those books. He's an omnivorous (if indiscriminate) reader. He's a highly intelligent guy, with good taste. He just happens to like a very wide range of media. I''m sort of the same way, which is part of why we get along. I think...

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

I figured I'd put it in as a release valve for something I hadn't thought of. For example, in the RPGNet version of the thread, one person brought up the idea that novels can send the message to potential customers that the line is well supported, and that can make people want to buy the...

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

A little background; I ask this question because I was having a conversation with a close friend of mine today, and it was his position that all the settings he really loves have novels. He told me that he can't GM a setting (or even get into it) unless he has a ground level view of how the...

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

Hey everyone, it's been a long time since I posted here, but I wanted to ask everyone a question. I started the same thread on RPGNet, but realized that EN World was the place I probably should have posted it, since D&D's the game most famous for having published game novels. Sorry for...

What's the difference between D20 Fantasy and D&D?

As someone who's written d20 materials that were meant to extend D&D, I've used it simply because I wasn't allowed to say 'D&D'.

So is it safe to say that the reaction to the idea of the show is generally negative? If so, why?

Define Core Only for your game

I define it as follows: Players use the PHB, the DM uses the MM and DMG, unless a player has an animal companion or summons creatures (in which case I let them use the MM), or we're starting at above 1st level (in which case I let the players choose their items.) I generally don't run...

Information on the Midnight TV show

Not Final Fantasy- I assume you mean Fantasy Flight Games, :) and if so, yes. Why don't you think it would take off? I think the time is right for a good fantasy series on TV.

Information on the Midnight TV show

I find it interesting that two of the actors (that I know of) from Fear of Girls are involved in this project, Scott Jorgenson (who played Raymond Ractburger) and Charles Hubble (who played Doug Douglason's brother, Pastor Douglason). http://charleshubbell.com/Default.aspx?page=Journal Very...

    D&D Weather!!!

I agree with everyone who says that fall feels like D&D. It does for me too-it's definitely my favorite season. Along with the Elmore factor, I was thinking that maybe it had to do with another form of nostalgia- I used to kick off campaigns at the start of the school year. Or, if we're looking...

    Battlemat stains :(

I don't know what the UK equivalent of Simple Green (it's an entirely organic detergent) is, but Clorox is a brand of laundry bleach- nothing special, except maybe its concentration. Still, I think that the brake cleaner is your best bet. Good luck.
