What D&D has Been to Me (or You)

I thought that was a very interesting observation, as were your points about "dialects" with AD&D. Actually I thought the dialects of AD&D made it much more interesting and flexible a game than the "all the rules the same approach" of 3rd. Then again this may be a generational thing. Modern...

    Tacos: Satan's Snack Food!

Can't do it either RM, but he did let it fly with a jam-up-job on his theory of the Taco Meat, didn't he?

    Tacos: Satan's Snack Food!

I don't know much about what Satan prefers to eat but I do know that Taco Bell is the food of the gods... of Diarrhea and Dysentery! Nevertheless I worship there as often as I can. It's weird religion, I know, but somehow it always wants me wanting more. But if I ever see Satan there I'm...

What D&D has Been to Me (or You)

Jan, I liked your description of AD&D as, "The Fight for Survival." I thought that was very, very accurate. I thought this was a great observation on 3rd Edition: "Players talk more about their characters' minutiae than the adventures." And I thought your analysis of 4th Edition was very...

I know Nature, and I know Nature Sucks

I prefer to think of it as, "Mutually Assured Domestication."

I know Nature, and I know Nature Sucks

She's getting on very well with my dog now. (Except the butt-sniffing, still not big on that.) It'll take time with my bitch. On bad weather days she stays in the top floor of the house in her new bed. At night she sleeps with her stuffed bear in her second bed in the underground basement. On...

What D&D has Been to Me (or You)

This is personally how I see previous editions of D&D. Original Editions - An odd mix of Wargaming and Fantasy, still pretty heavy on the Wargaming. Wargaming was becoming personalized and individualized, concentrating less on the grand sweep of armies, but of the movement and actions...

    111 Reasons to Prefer Kirk

These are not all mine. I swiped the rest. 1. When Data died, Picard had a funeral. When Spock died, Kirk reconstituted the body, forced it's soul back in, and even got him laid along the way. 2. When Picard senses that Wesley is having emotional problems he sits down and talks with him...

Got an idea for a column? Pitch it here.

Theoretical Assumptions If it is for a column to be produced just once a month then I will also pitch and make a proposal. Title of Column: Theoretical Assumptions, or (if you prefer) Real Gaming Column Contents: The basic contents of the column Theoretical Assumptions will...

    [January] What are you watching?

Very well done I thought. Not as good as the books, but a very well-done miniseries.

Gygaxian Sandbox Campaign - Good Advice?

Glad to help S'mon, if I did. I'll tell ya something else we used to do a lot that I kinda saw disappear from later versions of the game. Hirelings and animal use, both of which are extremely useful for good teams. A team of wilderness adventurers with good dogs, or maybe even falcons, is a...

I know Nature, and I know Nature Sucks

Yeah, I'm glad me and my dogs don't have to live off the land either. We could do it if necessary, but I got no real interest in it. Besides my dogs earn their keep by being superb guard dogs for my wife and kids. They're fearless in their defense, and that's swell by me. Otherwise, my dog and...

    [January] What are you watching?

I don't get called a pinko very much. I don't think ever, but I do like funny stuff. Safe for kids then in your opinion? My 15 year old daughter actually asked me about it, and if she could watch it. I'd had never heard of it til then. Thanks.

D&D lovers who hate Vancian magic

Good points I think. Experimentation is the Royal Road to achievement. But 2nd Edition is the only edition I never tried. I gave up D&D after High School and early college, then never returned til I was in my thirties and 3rd Edition was out. Did 2nd edition have a Sorcerer?

    [January] What are you reading?

I went to the library today with my family and despite my best efforts not to picked up some new books that greatly interested me. Wizard: the Life and Times of Nikola Tesla - on CD A History of the Popes - I need a good, concise Papal history for a novel I'm writing. SEAL Target Geronimo...

D&D lovers who hate Vancian magic

I neither love it nor hate it. I think of it as a system, like any other. It has some very enjoyable parts but some severe weaknesses and I gave up using it a long time ago. Not for the way magic operates in later or in other systems but with one I created on my own. However I thought it...

What Games are Best for Campaigning? Which are Not?

I'd like to give some XP but can't right now. I think that absolutely true. AD&D and Ars Magica were two of my first choices for great Campaign RPGs.
