Making untrained checks in trained only skills

This is one nuisance about the 3E skill system: no one ever has enough skill points to round out a character. The only exception seems to be druids and know-it-all wizards (6 skill points and the only core high-int character. No one plays bards, so they don't count. ;)). I've tinkered...

Could Fox's Cunning Make an informant Out of Someone Dumb?

depends on what the base Int is. The difference between say, 3 and 7 int is much bigger than between 8 and 12, I feel. 8 and 12 are above average and below average, while 3 and 7 is the difference between "just barely sentient and able to understand language" and "18 year old reading at a 6th...

Pierce Magical Protection against Scintillating Scales

Personally I'd say "treat it as if the spell weren't there." So if the guy with the feat is making a touch attack, yay for him! If he isn't, then that deflection bonus is just going to be treated as natural armor again (which may or may not matter depending on what other items, feats, etc he has).

    Ultimate Magus

Simplest answer I found was for my current character: Illumian Beguiler 1 / Wizard 4 / UM +. Using Illumian and Practiced Spellcaster, you can get +10 wizard casting, +7 beguiler. You'll cast at worst like a sorcerer. I've already got good use out of both augmented casting and some quirky...

    Is there an Arcane Theurge?

Current character: Illumian Wizard/Beguiler with Practiced Spellcaster, Vaulkrau, and Able Learner. Keeping rogue skills maxed, and as a 10th level character he casts spells as a 9th level wizard, 4th level beguiler. Not too shabby!

The Ways To Describe Conventions Without Metagame Thinking Thread

This is unrelated to the thread: I find it interesting how it is clear that someone has learned a language through verbal use on a regular basis, and not through book learning. Sunking clearly has very strong command of the English language, probably through years of use. While he frequently...

Suggestions for a LA+1 race and Prestige class for a Druid

Best druid prestige class: more levels of druid. As for templates or races, anything with a +wis or +con would be a good choice.

    Magic items

This actually happened in a game I was in. The DM was very by the book in how he handled anything, but basically said if players do something, then any right-thinking NPC will do the same. It was kind of hilarious when we fought a ton of evil cabalists and their items could only be used by...

fire/cold subtype at the same time!?

From my perspective, that sounds a lot like punishing a player because he expected the rules to just do what he expected them to do, and nothing more.

fire/cold subtype at the same time!?

I can only assume you liked the mixing potions table in 2E as well. That does not sound reasonable at all. Coming up with a rule that a player has no reason to expect, resulting the death of a character basically at the DM's whim?

How many ways can I make my spells harder to dispel?

I want to make a cleric that relies almost entirely on buff spells in lieu of equipment, particularly Luminous Armor. How many ways are there to increase the difficulty of dispelling my spells (feats or equipments).

Character Help: From Idea to Class

For some reason I really love this visual. Consider it possibly yoinked.

    Eberron Skiffs and Skycoaches

I was always under the impression that these things only worked because of the manifest zone Sharn was built on. Lemme check my copy of City of Towers and see if it says anything.

    Rob Heinsoo's tenure at WotC - a fan's tribute

So Rob is the guy that WotC can blame when I don't buy ant 4E books?

Core Rule Books Only - What system would you play?

Definitely something point based. Mutants and Masterminds being my favorite point based system, I'll pick that. But rather than PHB/DMG (since the Mastermind's Manual is more of just alternate rules), I'd go 2E core book + Ultimate Power.

Monk's AC bonus? Dodge? Deflection? Other?

Minor correction: All AC counts for touch except armor, shield, and natural armor.

    Orb spells vs anti-magic?

My favorite part of the Orb spells is that the Orb of Force creates a permanent ball of force. I imagine high level battlefields are littered with little permanent force balls. I want to have a character start collecting them so he can stock up a ball pit for children to play in.

    Good race for a paladin.

Especially fun for making a mount more powerful than any other warrior in the party.

Good spell to cast via Miracle for my evil cleric?

At the level they are at, every PC should have some form of teleportation, even if it is a once per day very short range item.

How to make a maze work?

DM just had us in a maze today. Didn't enjoy it for all the same reasons discussed above. It was also exacerbated by the fact it was all 5' wide, so when there was combat it was very challenging to fight effectively. 5' hallways + swarms requiring area effects to kill = many people taking...
