D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Most people, when they are discussing collaborative games are talking about collaborative world building. As far as house rules, you can always suggest something but as DM I retain the right to say no because people have proposed crazy stuff. I mentioned the guy who wanted to be a werewolf...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I thought DMs were Chaotic Evil? Always changing things on a whim with no logic or explanation. They cackle in glee as they ignore the pleas for mercy from their poor oppressed subjects crying out in dismay at another ruling designed to cause the maximum amount of pain. The piteous players...

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

I would think that many could be considered part of those shared resources they mentioned in the article. Part of the issue development hits is balancing workload with headcount. So if they can have people that are needed more for specific stages and time it so that they can jump from one...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I've played and DMed a lot of public games over the years. I've also had to start up new groups a few times because of moving. Starting up a group after college almost always included at least a few people I had never met. It's been a great way to make new friends. Trust until proven...

Since when is a preference a problem? If I'm playing I don't want to do any world building. If you have a different preference that's not a problem either.

I've had far more problems with fellow players than DMs. It's simply a numbers thing, ther are typically 6 players to 1 DM. If I don't trust the DM to make decisions they won't be my DM for long.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

If I've agreed to play a game, I've agreed to play by the game's rules (which may, of course include house rules). If I'm not enjoying the game I'll try to resolve it. If I can't resolve it I'll find better ways to spend my time. Doesn't matter if that game is D&D or Parcheesi.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Over the course of decades of D&D play I've never had a DM that truly shared authority. Even with my wife, she and I share the same handful of core house rules (it makes life much easier), she still makes rulings now and then I disagree with and it's fine. Typically we discuss house rules, but...

D&D General WotC: 'Of Course We're Going To Do' Baldur's Gate 4

When it comes to questions like dyes, I simply scratch my head. Like ... how much of a difference does that really make to the gameplay? There are far, far more important things I want the devs to focus on. You can have the prettiest game in the world and if the gameplay and overall structure...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I've been playing for a long, long time. Play with enough DMs for long enough and yes, you'll run across that 1% of DMs that make decisions I don't care for. Meanwhile I see no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater when in 99% of the cases having a DM that made the final call worked...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

One of the reasons I started DMing was so that I didn't have to put up with a bad DM. Which was unfortunate honestly, I think the DM was just burned out but wasn't mature enough to just explain it to us. In other cases the DM just didn't work for me so I found another group. No game is better...

I agree, especially something like chain mail shouldn't have that much of a penalty. Even plate armor could have special padding or felt added to reduce noise without significantly reducing effectiveness. Meanwhile I make mithral armor readily available.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

How is that going to happen? The crappy player is not the one organizing and GMing the game. By your logic the GM has no more control over who is at the table or what happens than anyone else. Meanwhile if I like the GM and everyone else at the table it is very difficult to vote one person...

D&D General WotC: 'Of Course We're Going To Do' Baldur's Gate 4

I would be happy with more AA games like Solasta, a game that in some ways I enjoyed more than BG 3. Admittedly the original game could have used a bit more (perhaps significantly more) polish but it doesn't need to go to the extremes that Larian did to be a fun game. Solasta II looks like...

D&D General WotC: 'Of Course We're Going To Do' Baldur's Gate 4

Same is true of virtually all games, even ones from established studios. Then occasionally there's an amazing game from developers nobody has ever heard of. All games are suspect until released for me.

It's a common theme that's gets repeatedly introduced even in threads that have nothing to do with GM authority.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

If it's a GM you don't know, there's no way any rules in a book will enforce limits other than the limits you and the other people at the table enforce by choosing to continue playing with that GM. If you don't follow D&D's advice on who makes the final call you've increased the odds of a...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

If I'm gaming with friends then I guess I don't have to worry about the GM abusing their power that is given to them by default in D&D. Problem solved. If I'm playing a game with people that I don't know then my point stands. Whoever is the loudest or most obstinate tends to get their way.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

You asserted that every caster who can have the spell does. They obviously do not. From my experience I'd be surprised if even a significant percentage do because it's a niche spell and while it's nice to have most of the time it's use would be far rarer than other spells that could be...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

In group activities of all sorts that I've participated in - whether work or leisure - it works the same. Unless there's some kind of other structure in place the person that's the most vocal or most obstinate is the one that leads. People put up with their decisions because it's just not...
