D&D General Why did you have to cancel/reschedule your most recent session?

We’re a group of 4 including the DM, with an “everyone plays or we cancel” policy. Usually someone has something else going on, or else it’s an illness.

Silicone Dice - What're They Like?

I have a set of metal dice but I generally use my regular dice for most stuff. My current go-to d20 is an ancient rounded thing is swirling blue - it looks like that RPG Network “earth” d20 logo.

Crones, Hedge Witches, Cunning Folk, Wise Women - Help needed for an RPG game

I don’t know if it’s exactly what you’re looking for, but Dolmenwood has that faerie-touched British isles feel, and it has alternate magic systems complimenting the more standard D&D style of magic.

    Your table is YOUR table.

I have a couple of the old editions - brown covers and 25 (rather than 20) chapters. Not only does some of that not hold up, at least one book was completely rewritten. I can’t say why, but the original had a ton of stuff that would cause outrage today.

    Your table is YOUR table.

This is a hugely important point. If people are playing on VTTs that may be based specifically around a particular rule system, then the ability to customize certain things around the “table” could be limited. This would be an argument that what’s published does carry weight over individual...

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Review of the Completed Podcast!

Mike @SlyFlourish mentioned a series of videos featuring Peter Adkinson where they play each edition of D&D. Each session is preceded by a panel discussion of the original creators or others who had been around for the development. I’ve not seen them myself so I don’t have the link…

    OSR 1 Gp vs 1xp?

Heh, back in my 1e/2e days the discrepancy in character level was definitely something that came up. We didn’t use 1:1 gp for xp, but between the xp amounts needed by different classes, and the different activities that gave xp, it would always create gaps. That’s something I do not miss. My...

    Death of Player Characters

I admit I have not played social-focused games like Hillfolk, but the thing about RPG combat is that, most of us have no idea about nor have ever been in that kind of hand to hand group combat with swords and spells. Other than positioning our figures, it is based on die rolls within the...

    Please delete this

Ignoring the whole ‘killing the prisoner’ thing as more of a campaign-specific issue, the main error to me is that the second DM made assumptions they shouldn’t have. Additionally, in a West Marches style game, is this not a reason why the home base is often thought of as a “safe” area, away...

    Death of Player Characters

This. Of course, this is exacerbated by the fact that the most popular RPG around is a derivation of a war game and the entire system is geared towards combat. Whatever players’ expectations, it seems utterly contradictory that people would play this game with the thought that character death is...

    D&D General Gaming Group Advice

It sounds like you spoke with the DM, made a fair decision, and burned no bridges. It’s probably the best outcome you could have hoped for. My group (old friends) also try craft beers, except for me. Not a beer drinker…

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Review of the Completed Podcast!

One other aspect to the whole issue of Gary claiming royalties, was having his name added to the works of others. I probably need to listen to the podcast again, but I don’t think any of the sources really discussed this. One theme the creators repeated was “culture eats strategy for...

D&D General Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Magic Missile: Why Gygax Still Matters to Me

Mr. Colville mentions this a couple of times in his videos. He interprets it as the difference between the open DM that encouraged players to make the game their own, and the Head Honcho of They Sue Regularly Inc., who was trying to maintain what he saw as their rightful hegemony of TTRPGs. I...

D&D General Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Magic Missile: Why Gygax Still Matters to Me

I can’t take credit for this, as I read it elsewhere, but I think it is applicable here. There have been a number of discussions lately trying to label people or companies (Gygax is sexist, WotC is evil, stupid, etc.). Rather than try to come to a conclusion, it can be better to simply describe...

D&D 5E (2024) Wizards of the Coast Backtracks on D&D Beyond and 2014 Content

For the sake of the discussion, this is the quote from the former CEO of Nestlé, in response to the suggestion that water should be a human right. I think it’s bad, and it’s no surprise that he walked back on this statement: "Water is, of course, the most important raw material we have today in...

D&D 5E (2024) Wizards of the Coast Backtracks on D&D Beyond and 2014 Content

You shouldn’t trust them. Their promises are irrelevant. What matters are the decisions they make. As it turns out, we as the customer base appear to have influence over the decisions they make. That power will last only as long as they worry about losing us as customers.

D&D 5E (2024) Wizards of the Coast Backtracks on D&D Beyond and 2014 Content

Late to the party, but…. Fair enough that we feel that, in hindsight, WotC/Hasbro should have known that some of their recent decisions would anger many of their customers. However, the fact that the D&D customer base has the power/influence to compel them to backtrack on unpopular decisions...
