    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

This seems to be the way of things nowadays. Between four games I'm playing in or DMing there are two humans.

    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

I mean since these are fantasy worlds doesnt' that mean its populations are imaginary numbers?

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Arcanaloth

I generally do agree with this. I just think there's a middle ground between 'this monster has one consistent offense option' and 'good luck picking which spell to use, newbie'.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Oh, interested in hearing how that one goes.

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Arcanaloth

It isn't getting at anything? It was just something I noticed.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

To be fair I don't think there's a version of D&D where this isn't the case. Maybe 2E and BECMI/RC? 3E has legendarily bad balance, 4E's monster math took 3 monster manuals to correct, OD&D was more like suggestions than rules, and 1E is organized by the principle of Gary Gygax shrugging his...

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Arcanaloth

It's not either/or. The new Archmage is also CR 12 but has both an Arcane Burst multiattack and some bite in its spell list. It also, ironically, has more hit points than the Legendary Archmage from Monster Manual Expanded 3, 170 compared to 130.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Any magic weapon that adds 2 dice worth of damage to every hit is a mistake. Learned that the hard way in my game when I let the artificer loot a black ice longbow from a dead eladrin archer. Luckily he was an artificer and not a ranger or a dex fighter.

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Arcanaloth

Like I said, I like the new Banishing Claw action. My problem is that otherwise all of its offense is tied up in a very basic necrotic damage multiattack. To me you could fix the new version easily enough by just adding some damaging spells back to its Spellcasting.

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Arcanaloth

Do you? A lot of the HP values for monsters in the 10 to 14 CR range were way too low in 2014. 104 is less than half the recommended 236 minimum for CR 12.

    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

Do you just use the standard Tabaxi or Leonin for the Rakasta or do you have something custom?

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Arcanaloth

This is the first time where I emphatically prefer the 2014 version. I like the enhanced HP and Banishing Claw actions, but the fact that all its offense is tied up in an Arcane Burst like multiattack makes it feel so lame. These things are supposed to be master spellcasters right?

D&D 5E (2024) A slightly different take on the new Monster Manual

Even though there's aspects of the new Monster Manual (and all the revised core books) I've been critical of, I really do like the art direction for the most part. Even though the lore entries have been shortened, the lore that is there is really solid. And some of the monsters I can definitely...

    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

The yuan-ti fill that role for me. They make up 2% of the population but they're the ruling class of one of the Ten Nations.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Though now that I look at it, Vicious weapons in 2024 are Rare, not Uncommon. Still way too powerful IMO.

    D&D General Humanoids...and world demographics

My homebrew setting was at an early 20th century era of advancement 80 years ago and had a gobal population of roughly 2 Billion. Then the world exploded. Well, not quite exploded, but broke apart. The gods preserved fragments of it and the surviving population was shoved together into these...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Isn't 3E also the edition that gave us a celestial paragon called Pistis Sophia, who was a giant blue winged woman with no clothing.

D&D General What would your "fourth core rulebook" be?

Echoing what others have said, but a DM's Toolkit that includes things to adjust play beyond the basic parameters. Maybe include that tactical module they promised us during the D&D Next playtest and then never delivered on, as well as dials and advice for running story based campaigns, sandbox...
