    Why THAC0 Rocks

The only point in your argument that I find to be partly valid is when using THAC0, it is implied that players know the opponenets' ACs. You can get the same speed up from BaB if the DM decides to tell the players the AC values, and the players then figure out what they need to roll before they...

What Did You Want Fourth Edition to be Like?

I would have liked a couple of things for/instead of 4e. A 3.75 would have been good, or a B/X + 0.5. Both of those are very unlikely though, and I'm not dissapointed that decided to try something completely different. I just don't like the way it turned out.

Mearls talks about how he hates resistances

Not all monsters must be of exact equal effectiveness against every possible party. Over the course of a campaign this sort of thing should balance out, a resonable mix of resistance monsters should be encountered. If your DM is always throwing monsters that resist your stuff at you then he's...

Which of these old school modules are worth getting?

Of those modules, I'm only familiar with S4. I'd have to recommend against using it. The module is almost all monster zoo. Yeah, the monsters are great, but they're all in the monster manual now so it's pointless.

Published adventures for pre-Red Hand of Doom?

I'd say the first two adventures in the Age of Worms Path. Dungeon #124 and #125. They're both good adventures about as city based as you'll get. Some other recommendations would be Sunless Citadel, Forge of Fury, and the moathouse from Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. Though those aren't...

3.5e 1st level adventure for a newbie DM?

I'll throw another recommendation towards "The Whispering Cairn" by Erik Mona from Dungeon #124. To give you an idea of what it is like, the dungeon is pretty combat lite. The main focus is on traps and obstacles for the players to think their way past. Part way though the dungeon, the players...

    Adventure Group Names

My longest running game was a group of 3 barbarians. We called ourselves Anger Management. On the subject of overkill, throughout all 10 levels we played, we power attacked everything. Every time. To the max.

    Most exploited combo

Cloudkill + Wall of Force An old school combo. Though it's not as good as it was in the earlier editions.

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

Thats true in any edition. The best way to survive a dungeon is to not enter it.

Keep out of combat in D&D? Why?

This is definitely the sense I get from 1e. Those 1e adventures don't hesitate to throw really strong monsters at you. That combined with the high lethality of the combat system mean that carefully choosing and planning your battles was the only to survive.

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

These are good points. To have a meaningful failure that affects the players, something big has to happen ingame. Death is the most obvious answer to this, and it is what the game has been using. Its rare that adventures include other ways for meaningful failures. A lot of that pressure is in...

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

The skill in 1e was finding ways to avoid having to make those rolls. The most obvious ways to do this were to avoid combats or to gain an advantage before the combat (knowledge of the enemies and surprise mostly). The perceived lack of required player skill in 4e comes from those elements of...

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

I'm not interested in debating the corectness of the GROGNARDIA quote as I already know how I like to game, and know I won't change anyone's opinion. I just want to show where I think it came from, since I don't think the skill system is a good example. Since I have a similar view on 4e, I...

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

Here is difference that causes the argument. In a 4e adventure against the suggested ELs, you can expect that you'll survive anything you encounter. Sure there is the supposed "tactical play", but my experience with the game has been that its really easy to choose actions that win the battle...

    DM vs. Player

I would say that the DM shouldn't outright tell the player not to be an idiot. If the player thinks that a sword to the throat of someone at death's door won't be a problem, he is allowed to be wrong.

    RotRL or CotCT

I played through the first 3 RotRL adventures and thought they were all terrible. For a bit of background, my group likes to explore dungeons and come across interesting traps, puzzles, and encounters. We're not very interested in the story of the adventures or the AP. Our experience was that...

    D&D 4E Converting old adventures to 4E?

I'm about 90% of the way through converting The Gates of Firestorm Peak (2e) to 4e. The only problem that has really slowed me down is keeping the combats interesting. For example, on the way to the Gates, the PCs are supposed to encounter a vicious cave bear. Looking at the bear's statblock...

    Best D&D Adventures

Tomb of Horrors My favorite. I loved this one on my first reading. I finally got to run it recently and it was great fun. Characters die frequently, but we knew this going in, so I just let them instantly return to life. Going in with that kind of attitude is essential to enjoying this one...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder overhaul suggestions, pt. 2

So we allow buffs and debuffs of the same type to "stack" with each other? In that case I am guessing buffs of one type still do not stack with buffs of the same type, and likewise for debuffs. If thats the case I think it would be easier to think of it as 6 categories, where you have your magic...
