Improving the transition to Paragon [spoilers]

After reading PirateCat's awesome description of his Grey Guard campaign's transition to the Paragon tier, I want something similarly memorable for my group. Adventure #4 doesn't really do that well. They're just about to arrive in Seaquen, and I don't track XP (I just tell them when they level...

Motivations for Lee Sidoneth and Giorgio (SPOILERS)

Lee is described in the module as believing "that Seaquen must be destroyed in order to save the most possible lives in the upcoming war." I'm planning to play him as a Well Intentioned Extremist - Television Tropes & Idioms or perhaps Necessarily Evil - Television Tropes & Idioms . I didn't...

    [very spoilers] White Wyrms' Boss?

It's Makung Shaftobem from Adventure #3. Makung is a male half-elf fighter from Sindaire who fled Khagan Onamdammin’s paranoia with 50 of his men and three ships. His partner is Cernaban Gremman, a halfling from the same module. The White Wyrms are a crime syndicate that's heavily funded by...

WotBS WotBS critiques for Zeitgeist planning?

Okay, here's one. My group just finished playing through the Fire Forest (4e). I loved this adventure on paper, but in practice it dragged a bit. We talked about that tonight and decided it was for three reasons: The Fire Forest feels like a distraction from the main quest (get the case to...

NPC reference for Shelter from the Storm

Maybe I should do that, too. My players have been complaining that they can't keep track of everything. :-) Right now, I'm just reminding them of who somebody is when they meet him (or her). Do your players use the reference, or does it add to the information overload?

    What's in the box?

There's actually a nice description of what the heroes find if they open the box on page 17 of adventure #1, if you're playing the 4e version. These sort of touches are make me love playing this series. As a DM, I have all sorts of contingencies available if the players go off the rails.

    Katrina Companion Character Handout

I've put together a companion character handout for Katrina (from Shelter from the Storm). I rebuilt her as an evocation mage from Heroes of the Fallen Kingdoms and mixed in a few other tweaks. Enjoy!

WotBS WotBS #9: The Festival of Dreams now available

I was planning on playing him as truly colossal (with his head perhaps 10-20 squares up) and just putting tokens for his extremities on the map. Maybe that's what you had in mind anyway. And then for the part where everyone , I thought I'd use custom 5x5 tokens, just for the cool factor. Heh...

WotBS Early WotBS encounters post MM3 release

Speaking as someone playing through the series, I have to say that the earliest adventures probably weren't tested for balance/fun factor. A lot of them have problems. Not only is the monster math off, some of the encounters are just not built well for 4e. There's a 3.5e sensibility to it, such...

    Which feats are "feat tax"?

This. The 'feat tax' brouhaha is silly. Some opinionated people noticed that the numbers don't add up, but completely ignored the other advantages PCs get. By all reports, epic tier is too easy, not the other way around. Why not wait and see how the game plays in practice, then decide?

D&D 4E Getting back to 4E via Essentials: What do I need?

The Rules Compendium is excellent. As you noted, it doesn't have any specifics (like powers, rituals, items, or monsters), but as a rules reference it's all you need at the table. Nobody in my group uses Essentials classes, but we still use the Rules Compendium for rules. (For more details...

WotBS WotBS #9: The Festival of Dreams now available

I haven't run it, but from the read-through I love the multi-part colossus fight in the 4e version. The shorter length is also a plus--some of the earlier modules (particularly 4e Fire Forest) had stuff that felt like filler; this one seems to be action-packed and relevant from beginning to end.

ZEITGEIST Will Community Supporter Subscriptions get the Zeitgeist AP?

That's awesome. I'll definitely keep my subscription going for that.

NPC reference for Shelter from the Storm

Sure! The original was done in Pages for the Mac, so I've included that as well as a Word export. I'm not sure how well the export worked, but give it a try.

    Tiljann Companion Character Handout

Here's Torrent, Crystin, and Haddin. I haven't done Katrina yet. Torrent's a bit uneven--she's the first one I did.

    Tiljann Companion Character Handout

(SPOILERS) I have my players run all of the companion NPCs in WotBS, so I make little half-page handouts for each one. Generally, I want to downplay the combat effect of the NPCs--by the time they reach Seaquen, they'll have collected five companions--so I simplify the combat stats and include...

NPC reference for Shelter from the Storm

There is a squidload (that's the grandma-friendly version) of NPCs in Shelter from the Storm. By my count, there are 19 recurring NPCs and 35 episode-specific NPCs. I love the detail, and it can be a bit overwhelming. To help myself keep track of it all, I made an NPC reference sheet, and I...

Cheat sheet for Shelter from the Storm

I've uploaded a new version with some minor changes. The biggest change is switching the bullets to check-boxes so you can mark off each episode as it's finished. I also tweaked some of the episode descriptions.

    HP Tokens

My group uses coins to track PC hit points (with 1 cent = 1 hp). Easy, intuitive, and people seem to like the physicality of it.

A little out of the loop...

Essentials is just the name of 10 products WotC wants bookstores to keep in stock. It's part of 4e. If you're new to 4e, the Essentials products are a good place to start. If you've been playing 4e, treat Essentials like you would any other splatbook. The products are: 1. Rules Compendium. Up...
