    MCDM officially announces their RPG

Not sure about this. If I had to guess based on my less than perfect view of the industry, I'd guess that there are more people playing non-D&D than there were at that time, because the market has grown - but D&D (and it's progeny) seem to have driven the majority of that growth so I'd be...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

Even back in the early days, I don't think I ever played a real game (a couple of goofy one-shots, but nothing real) that used a randomly generated dungeon. We liked our dungeons, but they were always the product of intentional design, and (in our stupid adolescent ways) tried to have some logic...

    Failed Campaigns

I think the fizzle may just an omnipresent potential when playing with people who have "adult life" commitments to work around.

    Just discovered Castles and Crusades

Typo on my part: "It does sounds like a pretty close 3E Ranger analogue."

Is a new GURPS version in the works?

I like the idea, but I suspect most, if not all, of those licenses were for a set duration and have long since expired.

    Just discovered Castles and Crusades

Just sat down with my CKG and crunched through what this really means. It does sounds like a pretty close 3E Ranger analogue. (y)

So I need a Gothic Horror TTRPG...

Leagues of Gothic Horror (an expansion for Leagues of Adventure) does a great job capturing the gothic horror trappings. Uses the Ubiquity system (from Hollow Earth Expedition).

    Just discovered Castles and Crusades

It's a clever concept that reads well - but I've never actually used it in a game.

Your thoughts on Generic versus Bespoke systems.

I don't really have a preference for generic or specific - in a general sense. It boils down to what I'm wanting to run. Sometimes I have very specific ideas in my head about the type of game I want to run, and there isn't, or I am unaware of, or I don't like any of, a specific set of rules...

A "Why Oh Why" RPG Thread [+]

Honestly, this one confuses me as well. I've only ever played xD&D rangers in AD&D - never in any of the "modern" editions of the game - where Rangers don't even get their spells until something like 8th level. Because high-level games were rare for me, I almost never had a Ranger that could...

    Failed Campaigns

The most reason two: Doctor Who Adventures in Time and Space: Far too much prep on my part for a campaign built around former companions (players could choose to adapt actual companions from the TV series, or create a new original character who was a former companion of their favorite Doctor)...

Because 'psionic' sounds exotic and 'psychic' makes people think of the Psychic Readers Network.

    Just discovered Castles and Crusades

This is my preference. I think it not only makes more sense to the player, t makes life easier for the GM as they don't need to know if the Stat is Prime when coming up with the difficultly - the difficulty is always the same.

If you were to play a card-based RPG, would you want it to also have dice?

Are the cards a randomizing agent, or do they represent meta-currency to be managed?

    Roll20 Weighs in on Esports

It's not so much the running D&D as a competitive game that confuses me. It's not my cuppa, but I've seen it done for decades. It's the trying to turn that into a spectator sport that hurts my head. Watching other people play a RPG bores me to tears. (Even obviously scripted "actual plays"...

    Roll20 Weighs in on Esports

Ok, I'll admit it - I'm really having difficulty wrapping my head around the idea of D&D as an e-sport. I watch a lot RPG-related video content, but typically reviews and walkthroughs - but D&D as an e-sport sounds like "actual play" territory, which bores me nearly as much as watching paint dry.

AD&D 1E Forgotten Realms in AD&D 1st Edition a better setting for adventures?

The Realms being Heartlands-centric so far as publish material goes never really bothered me though. The North and the Savage Frontier - using the information from Jaquay's "Savage Frontier" provided a lot of opportunity to built my own stuff, but still use the official lore as I wanted. (I did...
