The Savant Standard Class from Dragon Compendium. Opinions and Experiences?

The Savant is... okay. At first glance, I like it a helluva lot better than the Factotum mainly because it isn't saddled with the weird 'inspiration points' thing, but that's really it. The Savant is suitably generic, which is what it should be, but I'm wondering WHY it has sneak attack...

What's your favorite villainous creature type?

Outsiders (Fiends mostly) Dragons Humanoids Undead Honorable Mention: Aberrations Humanoids make great, well, anything. Most are fairly versatile and can be customized however you want. Hm, I want to do a dwarf-based adventure, well I can have dwarven rogues, fighters, clerics, wizards...

Andy Collins: "Most Magic Items in D&D Are Awful"

Not everyone plays that way. Some don't allow ANY buying or selling, others (like me) are happy to let the adventurers spend their gold on something useful. Hell, if they're in Greyhawk/Waterdeep or wherever, I'd let them buy pretty much anything... within reason. They've earned that gold...

What I Learnt From Last Night's Session

There's a Mounted Warrior PrC in the WoW RPG Book. It takes away the 'mounted warrior' concept from the Paladin (the WoW Paladin doesn't have that power and is, IMO, much, much cooler/better than the Core Paladin and all variations thereof) and makes it more generic. Unfortunately, it still...

    Unhallowed gallery is up!

I still bought one. :) This will probably be the first set where I won't buy any boosters and go straight for the uncommons and rares that I want. Not much is really exciting me, but that's good, I don't need anymore booster packs of the stuff. :p

What should guard a wizard's lab?

Mephits make good, low CR nuisances. Dread Guards (MMII) are nice, low CR constructs. I'm particularly fond of them since they're just smash-em bash-em types. If you were going for a larger dungeon area you could always have both an imp AND a quasit. The imp is the old familiar/assistant of...

    The Dragonlance Saga--your experiences

I don't like DL because I don't like the world and because I think the DL races are some of the worst ideas to have ever appeared in a game or novel evar. Never played the modules. :) But still, aspiring to be something *other* than a modular hack-n-loot fest is at least worthy of some...

    Dragon 353 came early!

Yeah, the BoF Incubus is not bad. I think I like the Dragon writeup better, if only because of its changed focus.... and the better art. :D

    Factotum from Dungeonscape

The Savant is an interesting class. My only problem is that it has sneak attack progression for whatever reason I cannot fathom. It doesn't even really seem like a combat-ish class, but for some reason, it has sneak attack. Otherwise it seems pretty solid. Prolly the best base class in the...

    Dragon 353 came early!

Not really. At least most new monsters have different abilities and flavor. A male seducer demon would likely just be succubus with a gender change, thus no need for an actual writeup.

    Ideas for a Pandemonium-themed dungeon

A good place for ideas are the issues of Dungeon that have 'The Whispering Cairn' and 'A Gathering of Winds' adventures, both of which have some wind-based traps/encounters. I can't remember the exact issue number, but I'm sure someone here can help out! :)

    WoW Monsters

Well, lots of critters in MC do crazy knockback attacks. The fire immunity is just to make sure that the intense heat of the Molten Core (and I envision it being very draining to an unprotected party) doesn't outright kill them as opposed to just making them immune to fire damage...

The Real problem with 3e D&D

Then you should just continue playing C&C. Why is this such a big point of contention? Play the games you like, why spend the time bitching about games that aren't your cup-o-tea?

The Real problem with 3e D&D

    WoW Monsters

Exactly. Instead of creating a new mechanic, I'd just use an existing one. They live in the Molten Core. That was my reasoning for being immune to fire, game source be damned in this case. The new WoW Monster Guide has a much better take on both Molten Giants and Core Hounds than mine (IMO)...

Spells that are annoying to DMs

Save or Die spells - I hate 'em mostly because it's such an anticlimactic way to go. We use a houseruled version of these spells that anyone who fails the save drops to 0 minus the spell's level. Plus, only magical healing can stabilize such a person. Mordenkainen's Disjunction - The nuke of...

    PHII druid shifter variant experiences

I haven't seen it used yet, but its probably my favorite variant rule in the book, for 2 primary reasons: 1) No dealing with the obtrusive polymorph spell anymore. Sure poly still exists in spell form, but now the druid's shapechanging ability no longer hinges on how wacked out the spell...
