D&D 5E (2014) Camping is dangerous (how can it be made safer?)

It can be shortened to the DM assuming that the party tries to find a good spot, and perhaps a Survival check to determine how good it was when an encounter happens.

D&D 5E (2014) Changing the Skill Check Paradigm

It's so common, in fact, that it is in the rules.

D&D 5E (2014) Camping is dangerous (how can it be made safer?)

Well, few deer or other friendly animals come within speaking distance of humans and a camp fire. And how many smaller predators attack humans, and are dangerous? (Lice, of course.) Not many.

D&D 5E (2014) Camping is dangerous (how can it be made safer?)

Making a camp safe would often include things like limiting the number of access ways. Perhaps even in a small cave? Place the guard(s) in a hidden place to observe the proceedings. When I did my military service we always had at least two guards, even with a small group when in a dangerous...

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual - What pictures really stood out, or changed your view on a monster?

[I think this is veering off into complaints that may well be suited for a different thread.] What really stood out and changed how I see a monster is the wonderfully sweet frolicking otyughs on p.8. I just never thought about how fun it could be to have a couple of them chasing each other...

    D&D 5E (2014) DungeonScape Beta Gloat Thread

Yay! I got my invite now as well! Looks good, though of course very buggy so far. Submitted my first after half an hour :D

D&D 5E (2014) Hex maps and dungeons and dragons.

The main advantage to any sort of grid is that it is faster than gridless. Fewer questions about exact positions, or if using rulers (or whatnot) measuring everything. (And I say that as an avid miniatures gamer well used to measuring.) On a grid every player can count the distance in advance...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle casting spells underwater?

Clearly a fit place for DM fiat. At least disadvantage on fire spells. (Advantage on saves of course.) Cold ought to freeze the water around the effect, though I'd leave exactly how to the DM. Lightning might well be an area effect. Spells relying on air and wind might work differently. I'd...

D&D 5E (2014) Hex maps and dungeons and dragons.

I used to see quite a lot of games played on hexes before 3e. In many ways it is easier, though straight lines and adjudicating partial hexes could indeed be a problem. The 1e DMG talks (though very little) about both.

D&D 5E (2014) Does this seem to be the edition that was made for splatbooks?

What do you think sells the most copies; a book aimed at a sole class, or a book aimed at several, or all, classes as well as DMs? The cost to develop and make them is the same. I think the PF booklets with options for a specific campaign is great. In D&D5 you could have some suitable...

D&D 5E (2014) I'd like to know the thinking behind this....

I think that tieflings have become a classic since Zeb Cook invented them in -94 for planescape. Until 2008 they were something quite different from the 4e version, and appeared in many places. Actually Saruman breeds half-orcs, whatever that is meant to be. (Mentioned in several of tolkien's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster Relationships

Is it just me who has a memory of grimlocks being associated (and perhaps even created by) aboleths previously?

D&D 5E (2014) Inappropriate breasts on female monsters

I believe there's a goblin in Phandelver with a whole necklace of extra fingers.

D&D 5E (2014) I'd like to know the thinking behind this....

Pemerton, I think you are missing the bits about pre-4e tieflings being singular. unique beings cast out from all society, as they had no such of their own. No common inheritance, they were all weird bastard hybrids of assorted fiends and humans. Not, as such, a race. They all looked different -...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Spawn of Kyuss

For me, I was never really fond of the 3e version - a little too much going on. Essentially it is just a tougher zombie with worms.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Spawn of Kyuss

Is actually CR 5 right for the spawn in 5e? I know that's what they are in 3e, but that is the same as a mummy. Mummies are CR 3 in 5e. [Edit] In AD&D2 a mummy is worth 3 000 XP, a Son of Kyuss merely 1 400.

D&D 5E (2014) Does this seem to be the edition that was made for splatbooks?

I have a strong feeling that the current position for D&D is to keep the brand going. It isn't the RPG itself that makes the real money. The money is in novels and licensing. Presumably mostly to CRPGs, but perhaps movies - if they ever clear that up. 4e wasn't good for the brand - it changed...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster Relationships

Oh, my goodness, this is beginning to sound like my favourite GoT recap show: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/c82d20c5b4/gay-of-thrones-ep-1 (Not much in the way of spoilers there, unless you are very sensitive.

    D&D 5E (2014) How good are Barbarians?

Or in line with some fantasy tropes. I blame Frazetta.

D&D 5E (2014) Does this seem to be the edition that was made for splatbooks?

I'm sort of expecting not splat books but campaign options books.
