    Adapting settings for systems

I think I'll change tactics here: Given your assumptions it seems evident that you need to change a lot in your setting between D&D5 and PF, seeing that the probabilities for grunts killing a are different. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) I'd like to know the thinking behind this....

Please, I did not say the best, but it is more popular ;) You and me both. 4e tieflings never felt like tieflings to me. The random traits table in Planescape reflects much how I like tieflings. Each a unique being with no home. Many mad, many weird or just plain odd. Nothing wrong with...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e death and consequences?

Curiously, there is a fairly hefty pdf on Wizards site describing the rules for their organised play. Most of the D&D games are not "organised play".

D&D 5E (2014) I'd like to know the thinking behind this....

I think they put tieflings in 4e because it was a fairly popular race in 3e (and in Planescape (Torment or p&p); who does not love Annah?) They appear as interesting figures in some 3e FR novels. They even had representatives in the Baldur's Gate games. Aasimar never garnered such popularity...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e death and consequences?

You raise an interesting question; are the rules primarily written for organized play, or should the organized playing be based on the ordinary rules?

    Adapting settings for systems

You're aware that we are talking about the difference between flavours of D&D, not between reality and D&D? Anyway, as I said, the differences are small, on the whole. The story is that big honking dragons swoop down on the poor villagers who desperately try to organise defences, because...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e death and consequences?

Which is why it is not good to have an extreme position hard coded into the PHB. It gives players (including DMs) a feeling that it must be so - it is in the rules. it can be used to force the DM to allow easy access to Raise even if it does not suit the setting.

D&D 5E (2014) Inappropriate breasts on female monsters

Indeed. Fantasy without realism would just be weird and unrecognisable. That is just a very cheap excuse to not have to think. I think that anything that can make girl gamers feel less excluded is good. Women are underrepresented as it is. If breasts help some I'm all for it, it is a very...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Spawn of Kyuss

I have just started running the Age of Worms (with a twist) again. And naturally thought about how to convert the spawn, but waited as I do not have the MM yet. I'll check your version more in detail when I have the time. It does look very 3e at first glance, I'll look at the AD&D version.

D&D 5E (2014) The Art of the Secret Door

Didn't Mearls (or somebody) suggest something like that early in the playtest phase? Just saying that they search the whole room could lead to a check, perhaps even with disadvantage if it were non-specific or hurried, a normal check with some immersion, and advantage if real thought was...

    Adapting settings for systems

Races can, and have, been introduced many times apart from the edition changes. No cataclysms were needed for all the half-dragon, -fiendish and -whatnot creatures that appeared during 3e. Nor when goliaths appeared. Half-orcs don't have a nation, but PCs can play one. Why does FR need an entire...

D&D 5E (2014) The Art of the Secret Door

Sorry, I mean the DMG example. (The passive perception is just boring.) It is a bit long for just a secret door, but indeed if you think of it as an important encounter, then yes. So, can I change my mind?

D&D 5E (2014) Are blackguards and oath breaker paladins the same?

Not surprised to hear that you've beaten me to it. ;) Heart of Darkness is a great story. I've actually played/GMed/cowritten three versions. (One including succubi strippers, lightning strikes against trollking (Gloranthan kobold equivalents) and the lines 'I love the smell of ozone in the...

D&D 5E (2014) The Art of the Secret Door

I always disliked the 'take 20', or passive perception solution to secret doors. If they are not more important or interesting than that I prefer to skip them. (If they are only there to reward the PC's high perception scores with a bonus treasure or such, well, fine.) An secret door should be...

D&D 5E (2014) [Parody Thread] Two new licenses for 2015: D&D COMPATIBLE and FREE D&D! COMMUNITY USE

Sort of trolling, posting a false press release, dated January 1st 2015. I think it would be good if a mod marked is as parody or somesuch.

    Adapting settings for systems

I really prefer that the worlds are consistent, and not changing unnecessarily just for the sake of minor rules changes. I'd say that the difference between exactly how many arrows it takes to kill a dragon isn't that interesting. (In 5e the dragon would just have to fight the militia a little...

D&D 5E (2014) Are blackguards and oath breaker paladins the same?

Ohhh, I just realised that an Oathbreaker gone Blackguard would make for an amazing Kurtz á la Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now! A paladin gone evil trying to do the same work, that is protecting the home base against evil incursions. But now by killing everything she perceives as a threat...

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for gold = a game breaker?

As long as you deal out XP in amounts that you are comfortable with (and possibly in accord with the pace of a published scenario) any rate is good. I'd skip the XP for blood bit entirely. XP for gold does have a lot of advantages, but perhaps XP for goals is better (unless the goal is to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tying PC Backgrounds Together

I won't take a pic of our map, as it is messy, using a soft pencil, and in Swedish. But it tends to look something like this: In my experience they more or less make themselves. Start by putting in all the PCs as nodes (nevermind their names for now, Stefan's PC is fine), some NPCs...
