Is the DM the most important person at the table

Why would I do that? I’ve had people do just that, and I’ve volunteered to play in their game and given advice when they asked for it. Telling them it will be hard and that they’ll suck would just put them off, and the only way you get good GMs is to have people go through that stage and get better.

Is the DM the most important person at the table

That’s a huge assumption you’re jumping to. I’ve spoken to people about GMing. Some have done it, but don’t want to do it again - they found it difficult, time consuming, and not as fun as playing. Others have never done it, and refuse to do it. Others have done it, and found they’re bad at it...

Is the DM the most important person at the table

In my experience it’s very much the case. And if the DM leaves, no more game. If you’re lucky, you might have a player who can step up, but it’s far from a given.

Chart of ICv2 Rankings Back To 2004

It was a huge hit out our way, and given the amount of material they published for it I have to assume it sold well enough.

Chart of ICv2 Rankings Back To 2004

The main exception I can think of is NWoD material, which didn’t have much of a retail presence but was generally a Drivethru best seller (and later did well in Kickstarters). Had they had standard retail releases, I’d say a lot of them would have grabbed a 3-5 spot in that quarter.

Chart of ICv2 Rankings Back To 2004

Yeah, only getting on the chart once (or 5 times) doesn’t mean much without more context. A game may have been a successful one-and-done. Comparing it to a game that’s had multiple editions and dozens of supplements doesn’t really give you the full picture.

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

System I hate: Scion 1ed. Just an absolute mess. I’m not sure it was playtested at all. Total mess from top to bottom.

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

People hated 4ed because it was a “just a mini skirmish game,” not because it had rules that ignored roleplaying.

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

Because the game forces you to pick a Trouble. Again, this is missing the point. It’s not that the PC never wants to get in trouble. It’s that he doesn’t want to be rewarded for it, or punished for not doing it. He doesn’t want the system getting involved at all.

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

I don’t think that’s really the kind of thing prabe was referring to. That’s really just a bit compensation for a failed test. You didn’t choose to fail, or be suboptimal, or naughty word up - the dice just didn’t roll your way. But in some Nar systems you are rewarding for choosing to fail (to act in a...

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

I don’t think that’s a fair analysis of their problem with FATE. Whether they’re trying to win or not is irrelevant, either way the system inherently disrupts their roleplaying. Whether you’re Aspect-fishing, or just roleplaying your character, there’s a required awareness of how the system...

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

I’ll not that ‘that wasn’t LG, lose all your powers’ is something DnD has moved away from. Some people feel that attaching mechanics from role playing kills the role playing. There’s a mental disconnect for them - it doesn’t really matter that they’re being rewarded to playing a character...

    Modiphius’ Latest License: Dishonored

Apparently most of the work on the game is done, so hopefully not too long until we get a release date.

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

I think the problem some people have is that they don’t like being ‘told’ how to role play their character. That the system is, essentially, too crude to reflect how they see their character. They don’t like it when the system tells them ‘you should steal that thing’ when in fact they believe...

Er, they kickstarted Geist 2 last year.

Werewolf: the Apocalypse 5th Edition Trailer

While it wasn’t Vampire, I would have thought Werewolf is a big enough property that it would have been worth it for a bigger company. Just surprised is all.

Werewolf: the Apocalypse 5th Edition Trailer

I’m really kind of surprised by this, TBH. How the hell did Hunters Entertainment get the license? From the looks of it they’re a tiny company with a tiny (if cute) list of products to their name. Was there really no one with a good track record willing to step up?

Dear god that trailer was awful. Not holding out much hope for 5th ed.

Cubicle 7 No Longer Producing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth

Yeah, the whole ‘AiME isn’t LotR appropriate’ is just standard edition warring and one-true-wayism. Plenty of people have played it, enjoyed it thoroughly, and found it perfect for LotR - including people who’ve played TOR. Just because it’s not your cup of tea doesn’t mean there’s anything...

Cubicle 7 No Longer Producing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth

I wonder if it had something to do with the approvals process - that C7 wanted either less oversight, or a faster turnaround. I get the impression the 2nd edition should have been out by now, in time for the Christmas market. If that delay was due to them waiting on an approval, they’d be pretty...
