Order of the Stick 597 is up!

OK, V is becoming almost sociopathic now. Xykon actually looked better right before he became a lich than V does now. (Actually, you could argue he still looks more put together.) So, does Elan get a circumstance bonus to resist Intimidate checks because of cluelessness?

    Order of the Stick 596!

The ONLY reason we have due process in the legal system is because humans make mistakes. Trials are supposed to determine guilt fairly. 99% of the debate you get about due process and criminal vs. victim rights only matters because trials are expensive and time consuming, and we would do away...

    OOTS 595 up

The whole point of a trial is to try to determine guilt fairly. The PCs in Order of the Stick commonly display meta-knowledge, including knowledge that they are in a game. That meta-knowledge included factual awareness that Kubota committed murder and treason. There was no need for a trial...

September 2008: What are you reading?

Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. Finally getting around to it after reading the spread in Dragon wayback when. Also, Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II by John Dower. It is very good.

    OOTS 594 is up

Ha! Rich answered my question (prestige class) and handled the "not another drawn-out trial" crowd (which apparently included V)! Plus, I forgot, but Kubota tried to assassinate Hinjo in the middle of the battle for the city, which is clearly and blatantly treason, and so justice is done...

    OOTS 594 is up

Is Elan lawful? Would it have been evil to kill somebody who a) just tried to assassinate his liege, b) tried to kill a pregnant woman and her husband, c) poisoned his underling who was too loyal to turn him in, and d) indirectly caused a huge demon to be summoned that killed numerous NPCs...

    Best 4th edition threads?

I haven't been following much of the 4th or 3rd vs. 4th discussion on ENWorld (busy getting married and all :). Are there a handful of threads that encapsulate much of the gist of the discussion that I could review? I'm looking to limit the number, given how many overall there probably are.

What Real-Life Dungeon Exploration Might Look Like, Graduate Students in Tow, by Lore http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/commentary/alttext/2008/03/alttext_0312 Excerpt: "We are hopeful that soon the priceless treasures of Appreh the Endless will soon be ours to mark carefully with index...

Great Fantasy Cities (and what makes them so awesome)

I thought Paizo did a good job with Cauldron. Of the D&D cities, Waterdeep always struck me as the one I would most like to visit.

    Who's the god of dogs?

Has nobody here ever had a dog? Dogs always worship their master. :)

What Creatures "Break" A Fantasy Game World For You?

Yes, thank goodness Dungeons and Dragons is free of races of violent warriors and pointy-eared intellectuals with whom humans can interbreed.

What Creatures "Break" A Fantasy Game World For You?

I think the only thing that would bother me would be really absurd things, like a cube made of jelly, or a sphere covered with eyes...or maybe a bear crossed with some kind of bird. Seriously, how can ANYTHING be too absurd for D&D? If a DM presented us with a dancing bowler hat that shot...

Why aren't flat chested women ever barmaids?

The real question is, WHY are men attracted to large-chested women? Most mammal species don't have large, visible mammary glands (with the exception of D&D races, where even the reptiles and insects seem to have them). I've read theories that it is because when humans began walking upright...

    Help with Chase Scene

If you happen to have access to Spycraft, they have some pretty good chase rules that could be adapted.

    OoTS #516

She used a scroll prepared by Xykon for such a contingency -- or something similar. If she were 18th level, she would be leading her own army rather than working for Xykon after being released from prison by the Sapphire Guard. Also, an 18th level caster with a horde of wights would have an...

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Hm... I vote with those who find rerolls and aura effects to both be a minor pain. They're not unworkable, but they require more attention to mechanics. Also, other than the Dex bonus, I don't see what's so stealthy about them. They're still human-sized, and they get bonuses to perception...

Is D&D the only game that radically changes each edition?

Didn't they try to radically change the mechanics of Star Frontiers before they stopped publishing? Traveller has had some pretty radical revisions, but then Traveller always struck me as more about the setting than the system -- original Traveller, D20, GURPS, etc.
