    Class Balance - why?

This Thread and the others dealing with Balance over the past few years have been absolutely fascinating for me to read. I have a much better appreciation for what the WOTC designers were going for as they developed 4th Edition. I also have a much better appreciation for what the 4e fans found...

    Balance and Uniformity (an essay)

A kind of Monte Carlo analysis, eh?

Peaceful Discourse: So what have you changed your mind about so far?

This. Well, perhaps -- that it is possible to have an Edition change without a war. At the moment, things are pretty civil. Hoping it stays that way.

D&D 5E (2014) Your First Reaction to the 5E Announcement

Careful. People are going to start calling you TheAuldSoftie!;)

    Civility

Civilly, respectfully: Nope. Too soon to give up. Give the folks at WOTC a chance ... maybe even help them try. AFTER we've had a strong, sustained shot and it DOESN'T work -- then we can try for mediocrity. Also: it's been another day, and I've remained civil. One day at a time.

    People are Freakin' AWESOME!!!

That is extremely well done. The last time the spouse and I tried to help Koman ... through her professional society ... we only made it about 3/4 that far! Great job.

What name would you like the next iteration of D&D to bear?

Given their vision and the goal they've stated, there's only one choice: Dungeons and Dragons. And I'm quite happy with that.

Hmm. What about Scotch? Could I get them to "Scotch" me?? I might like that.

D&D lovers who hate Vancian magic

I like Vancian magic. However, as long as there are so many interesting and clever people who hate it, I'm going to support some kind of magic-using system that ISN'T Vancian ... probably even in the Core. Playing D&D is all about fun to me. How can I have fun if I can't play with clever and...

"'Kill it before it grows'...he said 'Kill it before it grows'..."

In the beginning, I didn't like rolling dice for my character. Especially not that original rule -- I only wanted to play a fighter and I couldn't be assured of getting one (well, not a very good one). Over time, I've learned to enjoy playing just about every class developed. I've even...

    What Has To Be Save-Or-Die?

Whereas I really side more with Ahnehnois in this, I think I could go with Wormwood's posture. I know there are a LOT of current D&D players who just hate "save-or-die" spells ... and I'm willing to compromise to continue playing at the same table with them in the same game. For myself, I love...

    Hit Point style preference

I'm very willing to be flexible, but I admit I do like the Rocket Tag. Heck, I even enjoy "Save-or-Die" spells. I think it's the adrenalin junkie in me.

    D&D 5E (2014) What If 5E Becomes a Single-Edition-Pleaser?

It could certainly happen -- but I doubt that it will. I think there are enough designers at WOTC with real experience and serious intent; they won't let this occur. In fact, I'd be surprised if they weren't already on the look-out for this sort of outcome.

    I like D&D

"Easier to take things out than put them in." Interesting. I'll have to think about that before commenting anymore. One thing I'm absolutely sure of: I like D&D.

    Seeing new People

Indeed. In fact, I have the sneaking suspicion that some of these interesting but unfamiliar people ... are people I have (and am) gamed with! Perhaps people who have told me that "D&D Forums" aren't cool?:uhoh: You know who you are! Come clean ...

    I like D&D

Hmm. A bit defensive ... a bit tired ... more than a bit nostalgic ... but eloquent and heart-felt. I'm more a "big tent" guy myself, but even I would hate to see D&D Next disavow (in that elegant Mission Impossible sense) these things. I believe Mearls & Company expressed their vision for...

Vancian? Why can't we let it go?

You're undoubtedly right. Just don't tell me how complicated it is. How hard it is to teach or explain. In over 35 years, I've never played with anyone who found it "hard to get." Some like it, some don't.

Should multiclassing be restricted by race?

No. This sort of thing might lend interest and even versimilitude to some campaigns of in some game settings, but it's not worth irritating players who want to multi-class. I think the last 35+ years have taught us that there are plenty of players who want the freedom to multi-class. Let them.

Gaming Fans Absolutely Blow My Mind - A Rant

D&D 5E (2014) What 5E can learn from Spaghetti Sauce...

Garlic. I think 5e could learn about garlic. Early and often. With and without the Living Dead. Garlic. Just saying.
