D&D 5E (2024) Speculation on the art in the new core books

This sassy boy is the exception to 5E halfling art. He can stay. The rest get banished!

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

When you say the caster can use higher level slots you're requiring something that a fighter CANNOT provide. You phase their benefits out because they aren't high level, like spells. ALL fighters get low level stuff they can do slightly more of. There aren't higher level maneuvers to satisfy...

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

When realism is used as a club to beat down one small subset of classes, it looks that way. That or give non-casters some magic juice/deific blessing/whatever when they hit 9/10th level to get the same handwavium that casters get in order to do the bare minimum of functioning with their limited...

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

Unfortunately maneuver's dont have levels, and we don't have high level maneuvers. I wish old skool DM's would just be honest that non-casters are really only level 1-10 classes in their worldview.

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

Gotta love the martial double standard of adding in two levels of failure (to hit and save) AND a resource expenditure for things casters just get to do.

D&D 5E (2024) What are the chances they will fix the index in the new books?

Pet peeve is running into something like "Attack of Opportunity.... See Opportunity Attack" There's probably a good reason, just from a non-editor perspective it seems that simply putting the page number there is less ink lol.

D&D 5E (2024) Speculation on the art in the new core books

oh nice, I didn't notice they got rid of the yellow on the blue dragon's wings. Good aesthetic change IMO. I tried to rationalize it as using the wings for camo while burrowing in sand, but then it would make more sense to have it on the top of the wings and ridge of their backs.

D&D 5E (2024) Speculation on the art in the new core books

The real question is will halflings remain bobble headed grotesques or will our nightmare finally be over.

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

So you roll for murder victims? Did you roll to see if they snuck up on them? Or roll to see how they leveled up as an assassin? Or how the knife was made? Probably not, unless you're also JMISBEST (whose threads do amuse me). Most DM's just declare stuff.

Squirrels don't get rolls unless the DM chooses. I hate to keep pointing this out, but DM's breaking their own illusion then complaining about it really is a "Stop hitting yourself" moment, and not in the way bullies do it.,

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

No, it really can't. The DM is the one that calls for rolls. Why are you calling for rolls that you don't want? The Ogre minion never dies to a house cat unless you decide to let it die to one. It kills town guards without rolls, and gets to shrug off their attacks, just like you don't need to...

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

I've been DM'ing FAR too long to really pretend there isn't a man behind the curtain anymore. That dragon that lasts 3 rounds at 8th level is no more powerful than the large frog that lasts 3 rounds at 2nd. It's all an illusion. One shotting ogres adds a bit to the illusion without the hassle...

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

Hit points are a gamist and narrative construct. They exist as a function of game and story. They don't simulate anything, so why does it matter why this particular ogre whose game and story purpose is to get one shotted has 1 hp?

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

You don't use minion ogres unless you want them to be mowed down. Maybe you like tracking 15 orcs individual hit points, I have better stuff to do. However, even low level fighters took out ogres faster in 1/2E. A couple of hits and dead.

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

We had plenty of both. 1e/2e treasure tables and published adventures had massive amounts of magic items, despite the wierd modern notion that magic items were somehow rare and special. Like, our hireling's hirelings had more gear than most 5E PC's will ever see.

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

I mean,, it SHOULD be desired by old school players. 1E Ogres had about 19 HP and high level fighters using a 2 hander were hitting for 3d6+10 or so (gauntlets of ogre power, +2 sword, specialization). 5E fighters are chumps in comparison. Making them minions just reduces the busywork.

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

IMO in 5E tough things die too fast, chump things live too long. Boss monsters just get dogpiled with the PC's superior action economy while their minions are ignored unless they have some kind of gimmick that makes the 20hp spud with a sword somehow matter to a 10th level party. Swinging a...

D&D 5E (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

This is a fantasy game. The fantasy of the martial arts class is beating people up with martial arts. If the right way to use the monk its to primarily use weapons, the monk needs to be reworked. Realism can check itself at the door.

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

Clerics are behind valor bards and bladesingers, so I'd rate them about White Mage tier heh. I really wish they got some weapon cantrips to better fulfill the archetype, because they're pretty bad at mace swinging currently.

D&D 5E (2024) Doesn't Eldritch Knight's new War Magic seem to grant overpowered at-will damage?

Not really. It will still be ahead as EK's also get masteries. Champions will continue to be mediocre because WOTC designed them assuming anyone who picks them either doesn't care that they're weaker or won't notice.
