    Why is it so important?

I think *resources* are. I dont think daily, hourly, per encounter, per full moon etc makes much difference to most.

    Why is it so important?

Yea, but a lot of the back and forth and jargon and number flinging has ceased to make much sense to me. I tend to think of things in a more basic manner. I either could never tell, or have forgotten through all the other stuff, what your specific objection to per encounter is. I realize you...

    Swordmage Class

Thats kind of dependent on your point of view. I dont see any reason why they shouldnt change both.
  4. Merlion

    Why is it so important?

Yep, your right that that would be another possible solution to that particular problem. A pretty nice one too, that I wouldnt object to. So then your only issue is specifically with the addition of per encounter abilities? You have no problem with a wizard with the usual Vancian spells plus...

    Why is it so important?

Well, it depends on circumstances. And also lets remember there are more degrees than life or death or "gimme". Theres a wide range in between.

    Scaling the Caster Classes Back

Prexactly. And i do think there is also a place for characters occasionally being in the anti-spotlight...for instance, high-SR type creatures for Wizards, or high DR creatures for fighter types etc. But its when thats happening all the time, or when as you describe a character is alwats...

    Why is it so important?

Well, the only real issue with Merlin as an example would be narrowing it down to which "Merlin." :) For me, its basically this. What I see of the changes so far, which isnt much, I tend to like personally, and think are sound from a design and balance perspective. I understand all of your...

    Scaling the Caster Classes Back

I both hope and believe that the scaling back will be more of a spreading out, as some have mentioned. Having 30 levels to work in will, I think be a good thing. I tend to think that the balance issues of wizards lie mainly in a few ill-designed spells here and there. I think overall we will...

    Disdain for new fantasy

I've read Dream-Quest, and though I never thought about it much that way, I can certainly see what you mean. I think the big difference is that in D&D characters can face Lovecraftian beings on somewhat more even terms, and defeat them through direct might.

    Why is it so important?

Well, i basically just feel like almost any aproach is more like literature/folklore than the Vancian one. I dont think the 4e system will fit some concepts very well either, certainly. Each "magical action" will still be a set mechanical package...there will be no making up effects on the...

    Why is it so important?

Humanity called them "wizards" only because they didnt know what they were. They looked and acted the part, but conceptually and in the sense of their origins they dont really fit any common definition of Wizard. they were inherently purely spiritual/magical beings incarnated in physical...

    Why is it so important?

Yep, they do. For a while. And usually, especially at lower levels, they become unable to do this well before the other classes especially the melees become unable to practice their shtick. Yep, true. but also in those of everyone else I know of. You see monsters, you make a knowledge check...

    Why is it so important?

Gandalf was an Angel, sent by the higher powers to encourage people to stand up to Sauron, and to a very limited degree, to aid them in doing so. But the fact that he rarely "casts spells" and does more physical fighting than magical has more to do with the philosophic restrictions, and the...

    Why is it so important?

Your still not getting it. I want the magic in an RPG to FEEL like how magic is depicted in fiction, in a very broad and general sense. For me, Vancian magic doesnt really do this at all. The proposed changes in 4e have to me a FEEL and a structure that is much more like how I am used to magic...

Warforged: Like them or loathe them?

Well, my issues with the warforged dont really have much to do with them being "setting specific" as in that they came from the Ebberron setting. Its that their nature and their mechanics are simply not a good fit for a generic D&D setting. And yes I realize that players will know whats in the...

    Why is it so important?

    1) We dont know how long per encounter abilites require to recharge 2) recovering your per encounter abilities is not totally recovering from an encounter. Because Combat is really the only situation where these things come up anyway.

    Why is it so important?

I was responding to Celebrim's assertions that a "good" wizard does X Y Z etc. Essentially that the "right" way to play a wizard is to sit back and watch and only cast a spell once in a while, and that want not to be forced into that somehow makes one a bad wizard player. Gandalf isnt a...
  18. Merlion

    Why is it so important?

Ok, let me be totally specific here. To me, and most people I am familiar with, most of the time, contributing to combat as a wizard involves the use of magic to damage foes, incapacitate foes, kill foes, enhance allies, alter or control the battlefield etc etc and similar things. During...

    Why is it so important?

Sigh. The magic of a novel isnt usually going to map exactly to game mechanics, no. But you seem to have diverged off into things other than what I was talking about with that anyway. You also seem to have trouble seperating conceptual from mechanical. You said, or I thought you said, that I...

    Disdain for new fantasy

On that note, an observation. D&D is far closer to being "Call of Cthulhu" than "Big Eyes Small Mouth." The Lovecraft influence is very strong, especially as far as monsters, whereas I dont see much direct anime influence at all.
