    Why is it so important?

Huh? See this is the trouble. half the time I dont even know what exactly your talking about, so I just try to address what seems to be your overall point. I dont like the Vancian system. In any addition. At least not as the sole means of a wizard using magic. And as far as what we're...

    Disdain for new fantasy

I agree entirely. However, I do not feel that entertainment is the *sole* purpose of fantasy, or any creative work. It is also a form of communication, a means of putting forth and exploring ideas etc. But as you say, if its entertaining, then it is good on that level, wether it has anything...

    Disdain for new fantasy

Without actually knowing the people doing the writing, you can't really say that with any accuracy. Now yea, certainly stories in whatever form can end up commercial commodities and become somewhat divorced from their pure value. But in the end, they can regain that value on the other...

    Swordmage Class

Basically yes. People always bring up the Templars and the Bishop guy from Song of Roland or whatever, but I find little basis for the totality of what the Cleric is in 3e. The Cleric in particular, and the whole "divine" spiel in D&D in general have a lot of conceptual issues. In the end...

    Energy Immunity is the DEVIL!

I just disagree with it conceptually. If a being is supernaturally immune to fire...especially by virtue of being a fire-being, then fire isnt going to hurt it, period. Another thing I think would help some of these issues would be having more energy/element spells that are "Energy X" as in...

    Disdain for new fantasy

This exact type of elitist attitude is what caused me to stop coming to ENworld for almost a year. "crap" is a relative term. If a creative work was made with thought and feeling, and if someone enjoys it and/or is affected or made to think or feel by it, it has value. Its both. I can be...

    Why is it so important?

Except you can't say definitively that a certain design feature will have a certain effect when you only have partial information about it. You can say, "From what we know about it now its likely to have this effect." I don't think we have all or even most of the information about this...

    Disdain for new fantasy

Yea, I hear that a lot. I dont really agree at all, on various levels, but I don't want to totally derail the thread over it. To me "pretentious" is to pretend at, or feign something. Lain and Eva don't pretend to be about big stuff...they actually are, one way or other. Pretentious would...

    Disdain for new fantasy

I'm not really a big believer in the concept of "pretentious" Lain and Eva both deal with BIG major philosophic and pyschological concepts (quite a few of the same ones in fact), and they act accordingly. It would be hard to deal with those things in that format without being what some call...

    Why is it so important?

All I am saying is this. You've been saying all along that per encounter abilities are going to have certain specific effects on the game. I am saying, we don't know for sure what exact effects they will have because we know basically nothing about them apart from that they will exist. We...

    Disdain for new fantasy

I don't think "most anime that reaches the west" is a very good phrase to use at this point. A LOT of anime has now reached the west, far more than just Pokemon and DBZ, and much of it is excellent. Evangelion, Haibane-Renmei, Serial Experiements: Lain, RahXephon, Outlaw Star, the .//hack...

    Why is it so important?

And I would say most things in D&D are pretty clearly based on various literary and mythological figures, concepts, and archtypes. Of course, D&D has changed them. And there are some "D&Disms" like the Cleric. Or I can just repeat what i've said before. That many who play wizards play...

    Why is it so important?

But you havent been having a sensible discussion of the possibilities. You seem to have decided what WILL be the case, based on the tiny amounts of information we have.

Classes need to be ready to go from the beginning

So...players arent entitled to have fun? Edit: and I must say I also rather resent your refering to other people's enjoyment as "lame", and the insinutation that having the things you enjoy doing supported by mechanics is a "crutch". Since its basically the entirety of the purpose of having...

    Swordmage Class

Well first, clutter is a matter of perspective. next, because you may want to be that class, not a mixture of others. I dont see any of the current classes as "hybrids" in any way. And also due to the issue, which could of course be changed, of wanting to start out as what you want to be...

    Why is it so important?

First of, D&D can't make up its mind wether its generic or not. Second, within D&D, Wizards main class feature is magic. Their role(s) revolve around the use of magic. Without magic, they can't contribute much to combat and, to many at least, don't feel especially wizard like. People play...

    Why is it so important?

And theres nothing wrong with any of those. But for many, playing a wizard is about the wizard archtype, which is about magic, and knowledge. Not running out of magic and then running into physical combat, one way or another, for which you are extremely ill suited and which is likely to kill...

D&D 4E Things You'd Like to See in 4e that haven't been mentioned yet

This skips anything we already know is being added. Armor as DR. Class Defense bonus. Meaningful Specialists Magical damaging attacks viable at all levels. Balanced Cleric, preferably also conceptually improved but I dont know if thats possible. Certain changes to the Wizard...

    Spells for Everyone!

Yep. Exactly. Removing classes is one of the only things I feel would make it "not D&D anymore." Most people want the classes to be balanced in combat. Doing this, without violating the nature of the non-magical classes is a thin tightrope to walk, but can be done.

    Spells for Everyone!

Its all in the execution. Various non magical or mostly non magical classes already get various maneuvers abilities etc. In fact, the only classes in the PH that don't get clearly supernatural abilities are the Rogue, Fighter and Barbarian. As long as they don't give single class fighters...
