Multiclassing: "Any combo, any level, always works."

It is a fine rule, though one they've broken a few times.

Multiclassing: "Any combo, any level, always works."

I want them to call it Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, Wizard, Druid, Paladin, Ranger, Bard etc. I want it to be about the classes, not blanket groupings or "power sources"

Classes need to be ready to go from the beginning

Well, he may have got the name wrong, but the upshot is correct. Whoever was designing 3e had had experiences of no one wanting to play the Cleric, and this combined with their belief that every group MUST have a major healer led to the incredibly overpowered Cleric we have now. This is...

    Why is it so important?

Most likely by having those sorts of spells be very much like the are now. I personally dont think there are going to be per encounter or at will SPELLS. I think Wizards will have a few per encounter and per day magical ABILITIES probably either supernatural or spell like. They may well be...

    Why is it so important?

And at this point, we DONT KNOW if this is the case or not, which goes back to my whole issue with people coming to total conclusions based on whats really not much information... First off, I have a strong feeling that 4e will move away from the whole being built around dungeon crawls...

    Why is it so important?

Your missing a big difference that I and others have already brought up. A Fighter can ALWAYS swing a sword. Per encounter abilities are just that. Per encounter. Once used in an encounter, they can't be used again until the next encounter. Previously in D&D everything was either at will...

    Babylon 5: Lost Tails

Perhaps. But I personally tend to put a lot of my beliefs into my writing. And it is often relatively safe to feel that the points of view frequently expressed by the main/central/good guy characters of a story, especially one where views are clearly at play, probably match up pretty closely...

Multiclassing: "Any combo, any level, always works."

I hope this isnt the case. I hope "power source" stays as far in the realm of shorthand and jargon as possible and doesnt become a central mechanic.

Peter Schaefer's Blog - Racial Traits and Classes

That must be pretty tough to deal with, considering how uibiquitious the idea is, in one form or other.

    Healing

This is already the case. A Cleric casting Cure spells in battle is usually just trading actions with the enemy. Heal is the usual exception. Thats why healing out of combat is usually a better idea anyway, unless someone gets down in the danger zone. But the designers seem to feel its...

D&D 4E Why Vancian spellcasting is good for the game (and should mostly be in 4e)

Mogg's probably isnt with the wizard part, its with non-magical types getting at will and per day and etc abilities that dont have what he considers a reasonble rationale. I can agree somewhat...but as has been pointed out, such abilities already exist with good consistent explanations...I...

Classes need to be ready to go from the beginning

Underpowered is hard to determine. But it seems that for a bard to be effective at anything other than granting small bonuses to the party, one has to really know what ones doing and min/max like crazy. They felt that every group had to have a super-healer, but that nobody wants to play...

Things that you would like to see change/go away?

Feeblemind as Int AND Wis damage sounds good to me, but more than 2d6. I think there are ways to fix and improve this without removing the effects. Death spells are a part of fantasy, and prevent combat from always being a HP damage race. So basically like now. But with more choices...

D&D 4E Why Vancian spellcasting is good for the game (and should mostly be in 4e)

I dont know where people are getting the idea that resource management will no longer be relevent. Vancian spells will still exist. Invisibility will likely be one

Class abilities vs Talents (or both?)

But a rather different heroic fantasy. Theres a lot more magic in D&D and it takes a lot more different forms, for example. Star Wars is fantasy but it doesnt work with as many fantasy/fairytale archtypes.

    Monk and Swordsage

The only trouble I see with a totally "mundane" unarmed combantant in D&D is, as has been said, the fact that he would be rather ineffective against a LOT of supernatural monsters and other enemies. And I'm not sure how this could be solved without either a mystical or weapon-related answer...

Class abilities vs Talents (or both?)

If they do go that route, I think its safe to say that one of two things will be the case. Either all classes wont necessarily get the same number of "talents", or there will be a higher incidence of "class abilities" than you describe. Because there are as I mentioned certain aspects and...

Class abilities vs Talents (or both?)

That may be, although I dont think it will be identical to that. You can bet that spellcasting classes will simply get their spellcasting, like always. It also seems clear that at least the "at will" abilities we have heard about will be outside a system like you describe. I have a feeling the...

    Healing

Personally, I've never really seen the big deal about healing that people go on about. In the games I've been in, its rarely been an issue, especially as far as during combat. So really, the change I would like to see but know isnt going to happen, is to have them simply stop worrying so...

    Why is it so important?

But I am not solely talking about mechanics. And from the mechanical aspect that I am aproaching, the fact that you used the resources is what I am talking about, wether they get replenished or not. It had consquences in the moment. If you use a per encounter ability, you can't use it again...
