    Bargle Beyond the Red Box

Bargle's cousin (nephew?) -- who also goes by the family name 'Bargle' -- has an agency of sorts in the Kingdom of Irendi. He's also a vile cretin, but less dangerous than his relation in the Black Eagle Barony. The Bargle family tendrils spread far indeed across the Known World. I have to...

    Anyone picked up True Sorcery?

I'm curious about using True Sorcery for True20 as well. Does anyone who has the True Sorcery pdf thought about using it with True20? Does it replace the power/magic system in True20, or is it meant to be used in addition to that system? Does it introduce a new role to be used in place of (or...

    Bargle Beyond the Red Box

I would strongly recommend the D&D The Grand Duchy of Karameikos Gazetteer over the 2e AD&D 'Kingdom' version. Mystara took a serious turn for the worse when TSR advanced the timeline beyond 1000 AC.

Is 3.x Your Favorite Version of D&D?

Not my favourite. That distinction goes to the Rules Cyclopedia. I'm surprised that it's only 81 percent 'yes' here.

Goodman's Dungeon Crawl Classics - Which Are Best?

I thought that The Lost Vault of Tzthar Rho (sp?) was very good. I used it to start a campaign 2+ years ago, and although I changed the module a fair bit (essentially, I broke the dungeon into 2 separate 'smaller' dungeons, and changed the backstory a fair bit), it worked well. That is the only...

Is your D&D campaign a game or a story?

My campaigns have been game-driven stories. As a GM I set the stage. The players act. A collaborative 'story' ensues! However, if by 'stories' you mean 'railroading', I avoid that like the plague.

What did we do before feats, skills, and prestige classes?

I certainly agree with your main points here. :)

What did we do before feats, skills, and prestige classes?

When I played 1e AD&D and Basic/Expert D&D back in the day, there was no expectation that characters were meant to 'emulate' fictional heroes. D&D was its own genre, and didn't do a good job of 'emulating' any great fantasy fiction (despite some hamfisted attempts in the 'special printing' of...

    Politics interfering with gaming

I agree that politics is vastly more important than gaming. But that doesn't mean that you can't 'bracket' the 'far more important' concerns in certain 'less important' social situations. If I'm in a bookstore talking about fantasy fiction with the store keeper, should I direct our discussion...

    Lanhkmar's back (Runequest)

But the setting is being released for Runequest 4e, not BRP!

    Lanhkmar's back (Runequest)

I suppose so, although my impression is that that horse has been beaten to death, resurrected, and beaten to death again a few times. There are no current Star Trek series going. Is there a film in the pipe? I should think that current interest in Star Trek is, if anything, less than current...

    Lanhkmar's back (Runequest)

While the LotR movies are behind (although Jackson still wants to do a version of the Hobbit), the standing of LotR as the most important piece of 20th C fantasy literature remains. Certainly among players of RPGs, it remains of central significance. In any case, the 'Holy Grail' is a licensed...

    Lanhkmar's back (Runequest)

Wow. Is that an actual denial regarding 'Middle-earth'?! If not M-E, then what the 'Holy Grail' could be completely escapes me. :\

    Lanhkmar's back (Runequest)

Wow -- I'm surprised at the hostility towards RQ here (even before the new rules have been released!). What a contrast to RPG.net. I'm looking forward to RQ4. Complete rules in 100 pages? Easy rules for GMs but lots of fiddly bits for players? That all sounds good to me. I think RQ could...

Why do d20 haters hang out here?

Those two points reflect my own position reasonably well (though in my case the honeymoon phase ended around post 498). More precisely, after running two 3e campaigns, I found the game to require way too much prep time (and to run too slowly in practice) to use that system when GM'ing...

Warhammer RPG campaign starting--what to buy?

Nice threadcrap. I disagree with the opinion, but then I like the Warhammer setting and actively dislike 'bright and shiny' settings. The similarity to 14th/15th C Europe is a great plus. I somewhat disagree. It makes sense for players to have some idea of what is going on in the world...

    Treasure Discussion: AD&D1, D&D3

Diaglo's point about 'training costs' is worth keeping in mind. I remember that those were used in my OAD&D days to keep PC wealth down. Also, it is important to keep in mind that 'magic shops' were nonexistent/discouraged in OAD&D, so PCs could not translate their sacks of gold into new...

    Vikings or Celts

I like both equally. However, if you're going with a 'Dark Ages' setting that closely resembles our own history, I'd go with the Vikings for 'barbarians', as the Celts were pretty much christianized and 'civilized' by the 8th century.

    Castles & Crusades: Player's Handbook

I'm pretty sure that that rule has always been there (but my box set is across the Atlantic right now).

    Mastering Iron Heroes? Worth it?

Tangent: Hi John, has the membership of the group changed since I left? Is the group still meeting? I hope things are still going well (despite my absence!). :) (As an aside, I think you greatly exaggerate the dificulty in maintaining consistent GM rulings; at least I never found this difficult.)
