    I Recant (sort-of)

Right -- I was thinking in terms of personal history. Sorry. But that doesn't invalidate my original point. :)

    I Recant (sort-of)

No, you're not annoying me. :) I understand that some people like them (including one of my former players). The thing is, though, AoOs tend to promote a certain way of playing the game -- viz. a 'tactical' approach to combat that is best realized through the use of a board and miniatures...

    Low Magic Settings?

I don't understand why people keep mentioning Grim Tales. While a fine product, GT is not a setting. (And neither is Iron Heroes, for that matter, despite including a brief blurb on the 'sword lands' or whatever.)

    I Recant (sort-of)

Yeah whatever. Not everyone likes them. Accept it.

    I Recant (sort-of)

Strictly speaking, you're right. But in both of the 3e campaigns I've run (each of which lasted about a year), I had a devil of a time keeping track of 3e combat -- and especially questions concerning AoOs -- without using minis or some similar set of items. At least for anything other than...

The rule that 'if your opponent runs away, you get a free attack' has been around since the Moldvay Basic Set. Movement AoOs as implemented in 3e have not.

    I Recant (sort-of)

This is the main reason why I don't like AoOs. Plus they can slow down combat (e.g., "If I move x, I think I might provoke an AoO; so maybe y, no that provokes an AoO too; perhaps I'll do z ...").

    Dublin RPG scene?

Thanks for those links, LordKillJoy.

    Low Magic Settings?

Warhammer's 'Old World' is excellent (though it's not a 'd20' setting; I'm not sure if that's important to you). The Hyborian world of Conan is also cool.

    Dublin RPG scene?

Thanks for that review, Jonny Nexus. Gaelcon sounds very cool. I'm certainly planning to attend!

What other boards do you post on/check out?

Under what name? I post there regularly too (and probably hang out there more than here), but do not recall any 'Turjan'. So, to answer the original question, I also post at RPG.net and Dragonsfoot.org (and, very infrequently, at the Green Ronin and Troll Lord boards).

Rome, The Dark Ages, and Magic-Technology

Mystara had a 'Roman Empire' called Thyatis. Many of the usual 'Roman' elements were in Thyatis: a huge capital city with an arena, decadent Machiavellian nobles, conquered lands with 'barbarians', etc. Thyatis also had an airborn military order -- i.e. a bunch of warriors who fought on...

    Who are Howard and Leiber?

See 'Thyatis' (part of the 'Known World'/Mystara) from The Dawn of the Emperors by Aaron Alston.

Beyond Staunwark Island? (the best of other settings)

Check out the 'Wilderlands' stuff from Judges' Guild. When the PCs leave the island they could arrive there. Adventures galore -- with an 'old school' and 'sword-and-sorcery' flavour.

What to run for a group of complete beginners?

You can download the adventure "The Burning Plague" from the WotC site. It is a pretty decent intro adventure. Also, you can finish it in 1-2 sessions.

    Top 5 D&D Books

Strictly speaking, this is correct. But I would add to the RC the following: Gaz 1 "The Grand Duchy of Karameikos" B1-9 "In Search of Adventure" B10 "Night's Dark Terror" X1 "Isle of Dread"

    Best Setting Books?

I agree with Turjan that the Judges' Guild stuff is probably the best 'd20/3e' campaign material around. Midnight also sounds very interesting, but I just don't know enough to comment. My favourite published setting is probably the Warhammer world. I like its combination of 'real-world'...

    Kudos to Piratecat!

It is indeed a gem (and I don't normally like psionics).

Worst D&D adventure of all time?

If I recall correctly, the WotC site will let you download a free copy of L1 (Secret of Bone Hill). It's a fine module -- really a mini-campaign setting.
